Thomas Nelson Community College (Thomas Nelson) is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the heart of Hampton Roads, a region renowned for being the birthplace of America and home to communities rich in culture and industry. Thomas Nelson is a comprehensive community college, offering a variety of programs of study leading to an associate degree, certificate, or career studies certificate. In addition to the many popular transfer degree programs, the college is known for its strong technical and pre-professional programs and its outreach to the community as a partner and leader in workforce development. The college also provides underprepared students with developmental studies to help them to be successful in college-level coursework. Founded in 1967, Thomas Nelson serves over 13,000 students each year in credit instruction and over 5,000 in non-credit instruction and workforce services. The College is served by over 110 fulltime faculty, 350 adjunct faculty, and 360 staff members. Faculty and staff are strategic and responsive, committed to understanding and meeting the needs of the region.

The college has two campuses, one in Hampton and the Historic Triangle Campus located in Williamsburg. The college also has a satellite site at the Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News. The communities primarily served by the college are the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the Counties of James City and York.

The Position:

The Thomas Nelson Community College Network Services Department’s mission is to provide quality service to the end-user, whether academic or administrative, regarding networking, desktop computing, computer repair, web services, security, and end-user training. It serves as a resource to the campus community in the areas of networking and personal computing to effectively utilize present and future technology.

This position is responsible for ensuring the stable operation of the TNCC network. This includes planning, developing, upgrading, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. Analyze and resolve end user network hardware and software computer problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end user training where required. Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • A.A.S. degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field or any combination of relevant experience and training.
  • Experience in microcomputers, with experience in the MacIntosh platform.
  • Experience in customer support, including problem definition and resolution for both hardware and software.
  • Network installation and maintenance experience.
  • Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with network administration and management of network infrastructure to include email, backup servers, computer imaging, routers and switches.
  • Experience with VMware.
  • Experience providing customer service operations, preferably in a college environment.
  • Experience with the development and design of college infrastructure.
  • Experience with Active Directory and Group Policy.
  • Experience with SharePoint and web server management.
  • Experience with firewall services, including NAT, IPS/IDS, and network access control.


Knowledge:
  • Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards.
  • Working technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems, including Windows Server 2008/2013 and Windows 8/10.

Skills:
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.

Abilities:
  • Ability to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
  • Ability to present ideas in user- friendly language.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to be available inside and outside of normal duty hours.
  • Ability to work with diverse storage area network solutions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Industry Certifications such as A+, Network+, Security+, CISCO, and/or MCSE.
  • Experience in Microsoft/Intel in Microcomputers.
