Manager, Access Network Design

Here at Beanfield, we build, own, and operate the largest independent fibre-optic network in Toronto and Montreal. The layout of our ever-expanding network requires meticulous care from a handful of dedicated teams. Our Fibre Optic Design team (or GIS team) is an integral part of that process, and the team is growing!

Access Network Design manager will oversee access network design in new or existing areas using a variety of architectures to meet business needs. They will use experience and knowledge of access networks to maintain spec and project information for accurate and efficient designs. This position will manage a team of service designers who will collectively perform the design of the access networks to support our customers. Must be able to keep pace with the changing telecom technologies to ensure service requirements are met.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage access network design staff to ensure quality and efficiency of work.
  • Maintain and develop quality assurance standards.
  • Build talent within the access design team by educating team members on design standards and continuous improvement.
  • Able to manage team members whether in the office or working remotely.
  • Create and maintain design standards that balance costs and network quality to best support the business and be able to adjust strategies as needed.
  • Design access networks throughout the Beanfield footprint in new or existing systems while utilizing industry and Beanfield standards.
  • Advanced understanding of design concepts, including creating spec files, and interacting with engineering staff on implementing new design architectures.
  • Support all types of access network designs including newbuild, customer services, upgrades, migrations, as-builts, etc.
  • Collaborate with designers, engineers, and field staff to innovate new standards.
  • Edit, manipulate, and maintain data using GIS software.
  • Support new services and technologies through access network design.
  • Perform quality assurance to ensure design and drafting standards are being maintained.
  • Maintain documentation showing design and drafting standards.
  • Train and educate other Beanfield team members on access network design principles and techniques.
  • Support ongoing data development and analysis for process improvement.
  • Provide weekly, monthly and annual reporting.
  • Support order delivery schedules, and meetings and manage resources effectively.
  • Develop and direct staff, by carrying out the essential elements of the company and departmental standards, policies, and procedures, and by creating a positive work environment.
  • Follow and serve as a role model in displaying Beanfield’s Core Values.
  • Maintain regular attendance to be available for your team and as required by your position.
  • Work closely with the Sales and customers to finalize requirements and manage their expectations.
  • Implement Quality KPI’s and reports and ensure they are met
  • Capacity management for the Access Network. Generate weekly and monthly reports.

Skills & Qualifications:
  • High school diploma with a post-secondary degree or diploma in Networking, Engineering, Design, Computer Science, and/ or related programs.
  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience.
  • 2-3 years of leading and managing a team
  • Bilingual is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Fibre Optic Networks in a Wireline Telecommunications environment.
  • Good working knowledge of all Microsoft applications, AutoCAD, Patch Manager.
  • Knowledge of technology, standards, and specifications related to transmission systems, switching, digital loop carrier, and related telecommunications systems.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Fibre Optic principles, both theory and practical.
  • Fibre optic design and architecture.
  • Fibre Optic test equipment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, concepts, practices, and procedures and potential impact on business.
