Role:
This position is for a mechanical engineer to develop physical design solutions for leading edge Ciena platforms.
Responsibilities:
Develop mechanical solutions for leading edge Ciena telecom products that incorporate the latest technologies, with high spatial density and thermal challenges.
Responsible for mechanical parts and assembly design, documentation and database management for leading edge optical networking products.
Develop products according to process and project timelines in collaboration with various teams – systems, hardware, operations, Product Line Management).
Build strong relationships within our multi-functional teams, working with Electrical Hardware, Systems, Optical design, through interactions and communication, and through the development of quality engineering products.
Present technical reviews to ensure designs are closely aligned with project requirements, architecture, and timelines, and risks/issues are clearly articulated.
Work with Ciena operations and manufacturing to apply DFMA methods; to design new products for manufacturability and assembly.
Develop volume manufacturability processes to ease product production ramps.
Identify new manufacturing processes, tooling or technology.
Maintain up to date and relevant knowledge of industry codes and standards.
Evaluate first samples, build prototype assemblies, create First Piece Evaluation (FPE) reports.
Work with customer response teams as needed to assess field issues.
Work with suppliers on root cause analysis of failed or poor-quality components.
Required Skills:
Highly motivated, analytical, creative, methodical problem solver, very thorough, detail oriented.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, work effectively as part of a wider team.
Demonstrate commitment to product & process improvement, have effective project management skills,
3+ years of mechanical engineering design experience in telecom/datacom/electro-optics
Proficient with CAD software, preferably ProE/Creo
Background in the design of metal components (sheet metal, machined, die cast) as well as plastic components.
Detailed knowledge of mechanical and hardware development processes
Design database management experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required, Master’s degree an asset
