Position Summary:

The Fiber Optic Design Manager manages all functions from engineering to complete deployments of FTTH builds in various markets. This includes preparation of plans, obtaining permits/permissions and liaison with contractors and engineering/permitting department of local government/municipalities as well as other utilities. Other tasks include setting deadlines, assigning responsibilities to the design team, monitoring and summarizing progress of project.

Responsibilities:

– Responsible for conducting and supervising telecom design for FTTH deployments in multiple markets across Ontario, covering individual homes, commercial buildings and multi-dwelling units.

– Monitor design process to ensure that design projects are completed on time and within budget, ensuring project deliverables are maintained for all engineering related assignments.

– Implement and maintain high quality standards for engineering design process, conducting final reviews of all completed work by the team to ensure a high degree of quality & accuracy.

– Participate in meetings with key-stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes on a project-by-project basis.

– Imports AutoCAD, TIFF or other file formats and hard copy maps to create electronic base maps for road bases, MDU’s & Strand routing;

– Drafts and designs new plant extension and as-builts utilizing the client specific software;

– Produce various maps for construction purposes;

– Updates RF and/or Fiber Design databases and maintains system maps including base map, cable, fiber routes, addresses & RF design including commercial, SFU, MDU, node profiles & powering data;

– Completes system design by gathering information from cable designs, calculating powering and level analysis and selecting appropriate location for power supplies & nodes;

– Adapt designs to local requirements/conditions while maintaining a standard design approach for different markets.

– Consult with construction groups, consulting engineers, contractors, local government and others on construction and operating methods.

– Preparation and submission of project design drawings, followed by approvals, including: municipal/regional permits, crossing or proximity agreements and joint use approvals.

– Supervise the review process for as-built and record drawings to ensure compliance with original design.

– Team mentoring and training for the design group and other operational team members.

– Prepare reports for management regarding status of design project.

Required Skills:

– Strong written and oral communication skills.

– A minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in design of CATV or similar networks (FTTC).

– Experience with SpatialNet and AutoCAD is required.

– Knowledge of technical standards for the design of the outside network (poles, broad band technology, fiber & copper cables) would be an asset

Education & Experience:

– Bachelor’s degree in engineering with desired specialization in telecommunications OR a combination of equivalent education and experience.

– Minimum 5 years experience for design of underground and aerial fiber optic plants (including standalone or multi-dwelling units, within a professional services, telecommunications or ISP organization.

– Experience with OSP telecommunication industry engineering processes, practices, standards, codes and their impact on project activities.

– Technical experience in providing engineering/design/analysis, including splicing diagrams, of FTTx plants.

– Technical knowledge of Fiber Optic Network Design.

– Working knowledge of GIS based fiber optic design and maintenance platforms.

– Experience in developing permit drawings in AutoCAD with attention to detail. Experience with 3D modeling software is an asset.
