Information Technology Project Coordinator

An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the management and coordination of major projects for the Department of Information Technology Services that affect the entire County or individual departments. The incumbent works with departments, vendors, and the County Information Steering Committee on IT projects from development through implementation. The work requires oversight and coordination of consultants and/or supervision of ITS employees. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level technical administrator. Does related work as required.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
  • Assist departments with information technology projects including the identification of project scope, selection of vendors, negotiation of vendor contracts and price agreements, and writes and submits final project proposals for funding review and approval;
  • Reviews and evaluates project plans, architecture design documents and other technical documentation and sets time frames needed to successfully initiate and accomplish IT projects;
  • Assures that quality and security elements are incorporated into project plans;
  • Provides guidance and progress reports on information technology projects and initiatives and on the work of contracted consultants;
  • Coordinates purchasing activities for a project to assure conformance to project specifications;
  • Aids in planning and developing testing validations, training, deployment and support, for project activities including reporting, scope management, issue tracking, escalation and resolution;
  • Recommends modifications and upgrades to improve effectiveness and efficiency of operation when needed;
  • Participates in long and short-term departmental IT strategic planning;
  • Assists in ensuring that proper performance measurements are included and assists in the preparation of Operating and Capital IT project budget planning;

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS:
This position will support project coordination for many of Suffolk County’s technology projects. This position is in the Department of Information Technology and is located at various facilities in Suffolk County NY.
Responsibilities/Duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Creation, implementation and coordination of information technology projects within the County from development through completion.
  • Act as liaison between the Department of Information Technology and the user department sponsoring the project or vendor implementing the project.
  • Technology projects include infrastructure, security, networking, telecommunications, enterprise applications (including mobile and web applications), desktop support, GIS, business intelligence, database, RPA, ML/AI, and ERP technologies
  • Identify project scope, supports vendor selection, and supports negotiation of vendor contracts
  • Reviews and evaluates project plans, architecture design documents and other technical documentation and sets timeframes needed to successfully initiative and accomplish the projects.
  • Responsible for participating in project design meetings, coordinating project meeting schedules, developing meeting minutes and corresponding with team members and project participants
  • PMI certification is a plus
  • Experience with Asana and Slack a plus
Salary range from $64K-$106K
  • This position does not offer relocation assistance at this time

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

(a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field and four (4) years of administrative experience in managing and implementing information technology projects . At least two (2) years must involve managing financial based systems or

(b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years of administrative experience in managing and implementing information technology projects. At least two (2) years must involve managing financial based systems or

(c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

This role is a Provisional Appointment
A provisional appointment, which occurs only in the competitive class, is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or for which an eligible list exists with fewer than three candidates who are willing to accept the position. In order to become permanent, the employee who is provisionally appointed must take the next examination for the position in question. The appointment to the position is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates who indicate their willingness to accept the position. Civil Service law does not compel the appointing authority to choose the provisional employee should he or she be one of the three candidates.
