About the Organization
Instructional Telecommunications Foundation, Inc. (ITF) promotes social equity and supports under-represented communities and aims to promote greater social equity. One way that ITF does this is by helping to bridge the digital divide and providing reliable, high-speed broadband internet to educational institutions, libraries, and nonprofits that fight the “digital divide” and social welfare agencies that need it most – at reduced or no cost. Additionally, ITF gives millions of dollars annually in grants to progressive organizations, including organizations that influence elections, as part of their work.
ITF was formed in 1983, and has been managed in common with four other non-profit organizations under the umbrella trade name of Voqal. Moving forward, ITF will be managed independently and will continue its long-time purposes.
To manage this transition and help ITF grow in the next phase of its existence, we are seeking a talented, highly motivated, and flexible individual excited about taking on this unique challenge. This individual will be part of a movement to promote greater social equity.
Core Responsibilities:
Organization building. You’ll develop a plan to transition ITF to an independently managed nonprofit organization, including building out core systems, hiring and training staff who are experts in their field, and growing our wireless broadband offerings, grantmaking and revenue streams.
Grantmaking. Working with the board of directors and fellow staff members, you’ll identify like-minded community organizations and oversee grantmaking.
Board management and growth. Be the liaison between the organization and the board of directors to assure alignment in all future endeavors as the organization grows.
Shrewd management. Managing ITF’s spectrum and respecting ITF’s licenses.
Strategy. Smart philanthropic strategy and deployment of rare 501(c)(4) dollars.
Innovation. Finding new ways to launch media ventures with innovation and agility.
If you were here today, you would be:
Developing smart, visionary, short- and long-term plans for ITF’s future. We have big goals to increase our reach five-fold over the next few years. You’ll work with our staff and board to develop that plan and execute on it.
Building relations with the network of communities and partners that we serve. The best way to ensure our work has the biggest impact is to listen to, and build relationships with, those on the ground.
Developing a grantmaking plan to maximize the impact of our giving.
Building and tracking an organizational budget to monitor income, investments, and expenditures.
Building an organizational culture. It will be important to center diversity, equity, and inclusion in all the work we do moving forward. It will also be critical to build a culture of philanthropy and community building to best align our work with community needs.
Requirements:
We are seeking a team player who is entrepreneurial; has a flexible approach to a rapidly changing work environment; and has the ability to learn complex, technical issues quickly. You should have:
A close alignment with ITF’s mission. We care deeply about bringing about progressive social change.
A strong desire to learn. The issues and the nature of our work are complex. While you don’t have to know it all from day one, we’re looking for someone who won’t hesitate to sink their teeth in and tackle tricky, technical issues to excel at their job.
Strong administrative skills. We’re looking to build up the organization, which will require a close attention to detail and a commitment to building out our systems.
Strong interpersonal skills. As the Executive Director, you’ll be the face of the organization to communities and other nonprofit partners.
A deep commitment to equity and inclusion in your work.
Community organizing background and experience working with under-resourced communities. You should have experience building and sustaining coalitions, as well as working directly with communities and institutions served by ITF.
Experience in nonprofit management.
Knowledge of the political process and how to effect change. Beyond our direct service work, you care about changing the political landscape to elevate organizations and candidates who will prioritize access and equity.
A background in technology or telecommunications is a plus.
