THE CITY
Culver City is a Charter City incorporated in 1917, and is a destination filled with outdoor cafes, unique shops and galleries opening onto pedestrian-friendly boulevards. Culver City has a dedicated staff of approximately 700+ employees with an overall operating budget of over $235 million. The City provides a full range of municipal services including Fire, Police, Community Development, Public Works, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, and Transportation.
The Information Technology (IT) Department is responsible for providing centralized automated information processing, communications system and network services to all departments and divisions within the City. Information Technology provides department-specific applications, web and website technology, telephone system, productivity applications, project management, systems planning, design, and programming support for the enhancement of existing systems as well as for development and implementation of new systems. Support services include: system analysis, application development, software and hardware maintenance, training, and office automation as they serve to increase employee productivity. Additionally, Information Technology provides telecommunications support to all departments and divisions.
THE POSITION
Network Administrator
General Duties
- Leads or participates in the evaluati on of hardware and software applicable to City network needs. Coordinates the installation of servers, clients, circuits, and data communications equipment. Configures routers, switches, concentrators, firewalls, and other network devices.
- Monitors network security and performance including adding applications, users, and devices. Identifies unauthorized access and potential security risks. Recommends and participates in projects to enhance network security.
- Investigates, configures and maintains complex physical technology including, but not limited to, wireless, wide, and local area networks, servers, workstations, and printers. Develops and implements backup and disaster recovery for physical systems.
- Investigates, configures and maintains complex virtual technology including, but not limited to, virtual private networks, virtual local area networks, virtual servers, and virtual workstations. Assists in the migration of systems from physical hardware to virtual systems. Develops and implements backup and disaster recovery for virtualized systems.
- Investigates and implements Domain to Domain connections including authentication, use and restriction of access to systems across Domains, and appropriate firewall and auditing/tracking technologies.
- Investigates, recommends, and configures Wireless technology with new and existing networks. Documents configurations and potential security issues and solutions in integrating wireless access to networks.
- Performs technical writing in the development and production of system documentation, instructional and procedural manuals.
- Provides support for network infrastructure, e-mail administration, network security, database administration, and related hardware.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Familiarity with municipal government systems and practices.
- Experience with Microsoft Exchange 2010 e-mail system, Outlook, Outlook Web Access, and Active Sync technology.
- Understanding of Security practices, spam filtering and web filtering technology such as Ironmail and Websense.
- Knowledge of Microsoft desktop and server operating systems, VMware, Office, and related technologies.
- Familiarity with Cisco wireless access point technology, Firewalls, switches, routers, and controllers.
- Experience in customer service help desk support, training users, and small project design and development.
Minimum Requirements
Any combination equivalent to the training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be: a MCSE and security certification plus six (6) years experience in a position that provides knowledge of Microsoft client & server operating systems, MS Office, Internet, mail, security, and database software, web, and security technology products. Experience with network discovery technology such as analyzers/sniffers, and intrusion prevention technology would assist in qualifying. A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from an accredited college or university degree is highly desirable.
License And Certificates
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license, a MCSE, and security certifications relevant to the technology installed in the City’s environment.
Work Schedule
This position works a 9/80 schedule within a 24 hour operating City; therefore, this position may be eligible to receive call back or remote access pay when required to respond during an emergency.

Only the most qualified applicants who pass the oral appraisal interview will be invited to a selection interview from which a hiring decision will be made.
