Job Summary:

The Network Engineer – Deployment/Operations will be responsible for network engineering of the regional FTTH network, including deployment and operational support for IP/MPLS network, ROADM based optical transport system, XGS PON system, outdoor electronics / cabinets, transmission, D.C. power, LAN/WAN equipment, IP/Ethernet transport equipment. This position is responsible for deployment of network equipment as required, designing new orders, assisting as required in troubleshooting and resolving problems, and for maintaining all network documentation to reflect the state of our network. The scope of these responsibilities encompasses three levels of telecom hardware, software, and configuration deployment: customer equipment, network-based edge aggregation devices, and our core IP infrastructure.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs engineering deployment and operational support associated with the provision of PON and Ethernet transport services for a national ISP serving residential and commercial services.
  • Performs implementation, systems analysis and troubleshooting break-fix support with IP Network systems, equipment and facilities, including LAN/WAN systems, routers, servers, cabling, software, and switches.
  • Performs support for customer install team for end user provisioning of high-speed internet services.
  • Engineers and prepares work order documentation and Method of Procedure (MOP) for completion of projects associated with areas of responsibility including greenfield network expansion, and lifecycle support of network.
  • Prepares specifications for acquisition, installation and testing of new equipment, related software and upgrades.
  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation of equipment, systems and related facilities.
  • Assists in the preparation of short term and long-range planning documents, including projections of growth and demand for existing and new services.
  • Exchange’s problem resolution, best practices, tips-of-the-trade, and lessons learned with employees to capitalize on experience and expertise for maximum benefit across company operations.
  • Presents information to management and makes recommendations for changes and resources (hardware, software, training) required to maintain and/or improve communication, data and video services.

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science with a minimum of 6 years in communications and network engineering
  • 4 – 5 years experience in a combination of network design, installation, testing, and maintenance is required
  • Working knowledge of PON, Transport, IP/MPLS, and xWDM technologies
  • Basic knowledge of protection schemes and switching (G.8032, STP, MPLS)
  • Understanding of networking architectures, standards and protocols including Layer 0-2 standards, protocols, and equipment – Optical budget, splitters, VLANs, LACP, OAM, etc.
  • Good understanding layer 3-4 standards and protocols – TCP/UDP, MPLS, OSPF, BGP, VRRP, etc.
  • Good understanding of circuits and services – HSI, VPLS, P2P, Pseudowires, NNIs, UNIs, OVCs, etc.
  • NetDevOps skill set a plus – Experience with, Ansible, Perl/Python and software versioning repositories desired.
  • Understanding of software development principles as they relate to network operations a plus as we are looking to drive network operations through network automation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Project / Visio Network Diagrams
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, time management and interpersonal skills

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
