Introduction
The BC Marine Trails is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the BC coastline.
The BCMT is based on a three-pillar program: First Nations engagement, Caring for our coast, and safe contiguous trails. These programs work together to help the association achieve its Vision of
‘the entire B.C. coastline linked through marine routes and land sites for sustainable water-based public recreation’.
Our Mission is “to work with First Nations and stakeholders to build, protect and promote a public network of marine trails allowing recreational navigation of the BC coastline with minimal impact on the environment.”
The BCMT values the ecologically diverse environment of coastal BC and helps to protect the coast through responsible stewardship practices.
Description of Youth Position
The Communications Officer will assist the BC Marine Trails Network Association (BCMT) on a variety of initiatives related to communications-type strategic public outreach and member-support activities. The Coordinator will focus primarily on environmental outreach, increasing volunteers/members and branding and voice management of the BCMT environmental and trail programs.
This position is also administrative assisting with social media, newsletters, and designing campaigns to increase membership. Some work may overlap with fundraising and grant writing to help support our three-pillar programs. This job is fluid and includes a wide range of responsibilities.
Due to the nature of the funding for this position, all applicants must be 30 years of age or younger.
BCMT & Environmental Communications
The officer will take on the following responsibilities:
1. Develop an overall communications strategy for the BCMT with a focus on our environmental and maintenance work including a. Examine our branding documents to apply to overall messaging b. Examine our environmental work to date and develop strategy and tactics to improve our on-the-ground campaigns and increase volunteer participation c. Promotion of our site condition reporting d. Promotion of our clean up and maintenance activities e. Working with our Stewardship Coordinator to develop content that promotes our existing Marine Trail Code of Conduct public education program f. Develop an outreach program for the BCMT
2. Investigate our current social media platforms–Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter–and make recommendations on how to best utilize these platforms to promote the BCMT’s three pillar approach. Develop small campaigns on social media to help promote the BCMT and increase its membership.
3. Support and supply content for our social media platforms and newsletter.
4. Arrange and deliver one or two presentations related to Environmental Outreach. These can be co-presented with the Stewardship/First Nations coordinator.
5. The Officer role will develop stories around the association, its volunteers, board members and staff to help promote the BCMT.
Experience and Qualifications
- Experience handling a reasonably complex communications campaign.
- Wide knowledge of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram platforms.
- Experience expanding an organization’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram engagement along with knowledge of the analytics and metrics these platforms use.
- Experience producing a range of marketing materials.
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience in business, communications and/or marketing within an environmental context.
- Some technical skills in WordPress, graphics, and marketing analytics. Some training is available at BCMT.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Knowledge and experience in fundraising and grant writing.
- Experience in the outdoor adventure industry, tourism, paddle sports and/or trail building is an asset but not required.
Work environment
The Officer will be expected to work remotely in a home office environment available to the
Officer, have access to basic communications tools such as a cell and/or land phone, all necessary personal and professional insurance, basic office equipment such as a laptop computer and access to the internet, and access to basic transportation to be able to attend meetings as necessary. The responsibility for providing these would be the sole responsibility of the Officer. The Officer should have WorkSafe BC coverage. They may be covered by BCMT coverage.
The majority of work will be within business hours and largely by phone or other telecommunications (i.e. Zoom, Slack), with the exception of occasional evening meetings as required.
The Officer will report to BCMT president, Paul Grey, for all professional matters, and work collaboratively with and through the direction of the Stewardship Coordinator and First Nation
Liaison on all program-related matters.
The Officer will also work with the various committees and chairs.
Contract Details
1. The officer will submit an invoice once a month to the treasurer and president.
2. The officer will keep track of their hours and descriptions of their hours on a Google spreadsheet. An example is available for use.
3. The officer will be paid $27.50 an hour plus GST. The officer must obtain a GST number.
4. Initially this contract will run from November 7th to April 7th; with funding available for up to 35 hours a week. Extension of the contract is reliant on available funding.
