The Telecommunication Specialist is responsible for deploying, supporting, troubleshooting, and repairing Voice, Data, Cable TV, and Wireless infrastructure. Candidates should have a working knowledge of Cisco VoIP phone systems, voicemail systems, call center, switchboard, and related third-party applications, as well as Service Provider connections, and protocols. The Specialist should be familiar with techniques for working with copper, coax, and fiber cables, including installation, terminations, and testing.

This position is responsible for assisting with maintaining a Cisco VoIP phone system and related applications. The Telecommunication Specialist will need to work unsupervised to troubleshoot and repair Voice, Data, CATV, Video, and Wireless network issues that may arise.

Position Duties
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain Voice, Data, CATV, Video, and Wireless communication equipment on all campuses. Including equipment such as VoIP/analog telephones, conference phones, fax machines, modems, credit card machines, alarms, emergency phones, PSTN circuits, Cable TV equipment, Wireless Access Points, and Data Switches.
  • Prepare and gather necessary information for departmental adds, moves, or changes. Review architectural drawings and plans as it relates to Telecommunications services.
  • Access, assign, and resolve Help Desk work orders. Escalate to manufacturers and vendors as needed.
  • Maintain and update database of user records, system documentation, and diagrams.
  • Maintain ongoing knowledge of all Voice, Data, CATV, Video, and Wireless communication hardware and software.
  • Assist vendors when installing and field-testing equipment at all remote sites.
  • Monitor the status of the routers, servers, PSTN circuits, and IP trunks daily to ensure that the systems are up and running without errors or alarm indications.
  • Test and benchmark new communication equipment before installation.
  • Assist with wireless access point and data switch installation.
  • Maintain parts and equipment inventory.
  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related technical field and/or at least 3 years experience in the voice and/or data communication field.
  • Demonstrated experience with Voice, Data, CATV, Video, and Wireless network administration, troubleshooting, and support concepts.
  • Demonstrated experience with Cisco phones, voice mail systems, and associated applications.
  • Knowledge of T1, SIP, TDM PRI, and LAN/WAN connection types and protocols.
  • Familiarity with Personal Computer operating systems and software applications and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with networking concepts, VLANs, switches, and routers.

Work Hours
Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm are typical hours. Additional evening and weekend hours as necessary. In addition, this position is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to issues with equipment.

The position will support and will be required to travel to all University campus locations in NYC and Westchester.

$60,000.00

$67,000.00
