Description
The Food Safety Branch of the Kentucky Department for Public Health protects consumers from the sale of adulterated, misbranded and falsely labeled foods and food products. The branch ensures the safety of food products in restaurants, grocery stores, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, food processing plants, and other locations where food is offered to the public. The Food Safety Branch provides technical assistance and guidance to health departments carrying out state laws and regulations at the local level. The branch also provides training and information to industry and consumers and issues permits to qualified providers.

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Implement program standards, develop regulations and technical materials relating to the Food Safety Programs.
  • Implement the Food Safety Program according to state and federal regulations and plan and review inspections.
  • Develop and implement standards for sanitary requirements for compliance guidelines and interpretations regarding Kentucky Food Safety Laws and regulations.
  • Plan investigation evaluations and surveys carried out with Local Health Departments.
  • Provide supervision of Branch staff in planning and evaluating inspections, investigations, environmental assessments and the surveys conducted by Branch personnel and Health Departments.
  • Prepare annual program plans, monitor the Branch budget and evaluate objectives and activities as needed.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Three years of professional experience in Food Safety and interpretation of regulations.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good data entry skills.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree with a minor or twenty-four (24) semester hours in environmental health, biological science or physical science; OR, registration as a Kentucky Environmental Specialist/Sanitarian.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of administrative experience in public/environmental health programs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver’s license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be registered as an Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian under the provisions of KRS 223 within twelve (12) months of appointment. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. However, travel will be required when making on-site visits and employees in this class will be exposed to the same environmental conditions as those in the regulated industries.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
