At Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Telecommunication Services group (NIE-TS) in the Network, Infrastructure, and Engineering Division is seeking an experienced Telecommunication Drafter / AutoCAD Operator (Telecommunications Professional I) to work with telecommunications designs on outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) telecommunications infrastructure.
In this position, you will use your deep knowledge of AutoCAD, drafting standards, A/E design, and telecommunications to draft all aspects of a campus data/telecommunications infrastructure environment-and challenge yourself with new and exciting technologies to master. The NIE-TS team designs and manages the design, drafting, and bidding of all voice/data network infrastructure over the 43 square mile campus of Los Alamos National Laboratory.
You will have the opportunity to hone your telecommunications drafting skills in our diverse environment of business, scientific, research, and high-security facilities.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Prepare detailed telecommunications drawings for internal LANL customers under the direction of multiple telecommunications designers.
- Responsible for the maintenance of the CAD drawing library according to company standards (file names, directories, drawing types, scans, etc.)
- Report status and interface with telecommunications designers regarding project timelines.
- Help improve and maintain current quality assurance process and improve overall product quality.
- Communicating with design team staff and customers over phone, email, and Teams.
- Managing time effectively while working on multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Performing quality checks on plan design drawings
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Outstanding communication and collaboration skills.
- Understanding of the architectural/engineering/construction (AEC) design/bid/build process.
- Ability to set up and manage CAD drafting and plan preparation standards
- Detail oriented, professional attitude, good communication, team player, self-starter.
Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with other LANL departments to coordinate drafting requirements for complex A/E projects.
- Experience reading architectural/engineering plans, telecommunications drawings, and floor plans including familiarity with telecom projects detailing outdoor equipment, indoor building layouts, communications rooms, and grounding/electrical diagrams
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
- Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
