Apex Systems is a global IT services provider and our staffing practice has an opening for a Director of Communication with 10+ years of corporate communication, Bachelor’s Degree in communications or journalism and excellent communication experience to place at our client, a leading Canadian mass media company.

Client: Telecommunication

Terms: Permanent Role.

Location: Toronto, ON or Montreal, QC – 2 days in office per week.

Job Description:

The Communications team develops and manages all external and internal communications strategies.

We are currently seeking a Director, Communications to develop strategies and plans for external and internal communications to help support and enhance our client’s reputation. If you are a seasoned communications professional with 10+ years of leadership experience in corporate communications and issues management, complemented by exceptional judgment and an ability to work in a dynamic and complex organization, this may be an excellent career opportunity for you.

Job Duties/ Accountabilities:

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Communications, the Director’s primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Create a proactive issues management plan, working in close collaboration with key stakeholders, applying exceptional judgment to anticipate and effectively manage organizational risks and issues.
  • Build a robust issues management system that includes documentation of processes, approvals, and alignment with key business units.
  • Participate in the Corporate Emergency Operations Centre and lead communications efforts, including; the development of key messages, channel strategy, preparing spokespeople and materials.
  • Coordinate development of messages to shape company reputation internally and externally.
  • Implement internal communication programs to support business goals and enhance global understanding of corporate strategy.
  • Establish relationships with key reporters and editors.
  • Write and edit corporate communication materials, including; press releases, press kits, video scripts, executive speeches and internet/intranet materials to enhance corporate reputation.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with teams and leaders across the company, responding to their needs while balancing organizational priorities.
  • Liaise with public relations agencies, photographers, designers, writers, printers, and other vendors on relevant programs.
  • Help prepare measurement of results of communication initiatives.
  • Demonstrate leadership and implement ideas that maximize the performance and engagement of the external and internal communications teams.
  • Lead a dynamic team of communications professionals while working closely with other leaders within multi-disciplinary project teams on key initiatives.

Essential Skills/ Competencies:

  • 10+ years of leadership experience in corporate communications, media relations and crisis communications.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism or related field
  • Proven ability to remain calm under pressure, provide a highly strategic lens to issues management and turn major issues impacting organizational reputation into opportunities to reinforce key values and strategies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with executives, coworkers, managers and clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Effective organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent business and industry awareness, staying current on trends that impact the business.
  • Ability to lead a team and effectively work in a team, as well as across teams in a highly matrixed environment.
  • Experience in a complex, issues driven organization.
