Our Water Services Department is seeking a Communication Technologist IV who will perform a wide variety of technical duties to ensure 24/7 reliability and functionality of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Voice Radio systems.
You are a self-motivated, reliable, team oriented individual with the ability to carry out technical support and maintenance of SCADA and Voice Radio systems communication equipment, and to work independently or in a group to configure and program RTU’s for data acquisition, install data and voice radios, perform commissioning duties, and provide assistance to engineers as a Subject Matter Expert in wireless communication.
This role: (The duties described hereunder are intended to be representative of the position and are not to be considered as all inclusive.)
- Identify, isolate and correct hardware failures in Remote Terminal Units (RTU’s). Identify and correct software problems associated with the RTU related to the SCADA function. Assist other trades in isolating and identifying and correcting software/hardware problems to do with local control or “global” control strategies or instrumentation and electrical devices connected to the RTU’s.
- Install and test new RTU’s and new additions to existing RTU’s including configuration and programming. Assists in the development, programming and checkout of RTU applications software.
- Identify, isolate and correct hardware and software failures in SCADA master station computer equipment not maintained by 3rd party maintenance agreements (e.g. computer supplier). Perform preventative maintenance.
- Install, test, troubleshoot and maintain VHF, UHF, and microwave radio communications equipment for voice and data including associated multiplex equipment.
- Monitor the performance of leased and dial up telephone data circuits. Assist telephone company in the troubleshooting and repair of failed circuits.
- Monitor performance of SCADA communication channels and perform preventative maintenance required to maintain a high level of system reliability.
- Assists and coordinates with digital control software specialist in the SCADA function.
- Install, test and maintain Public Address equipment including amplifiers, microphones and speakers.
- Design and construct special circuitry where required to adapt or interface signals between equipment or to perform special tasks.
- Purchase minor materials and equipment. Follows purchasing and accounting procedures as relevant for job.
- Provide instruction for trainee level technologists and assists in indoctrination of new employees.
- Assist operating and other maintenance personnel in the safe and effective use of equipment.
- Coordinate work with other departments and trades, reports in work progress.
- Keep up to date with current level of technology and apply to new work methods, techniques and safety regulations.
- Attend training courses and seminars relevant to duties of the job in areas such as safety, new equipment and work methods.
- Prepare and maintain neat and accurate records and record systems such as equipment acceptance tests, setting sheets, program listings and documentation, maintenance records, trouble reports and drawings.
- Assists in the evaluation of new equipment and procedures by carrying out functional and maintenance checks on the equipment/procedures. Provides input into the assessment of needs and application of new systems and technology.
To be successful, you have:
- Grade 12, plus a 2-year technology diploma in electronics with a telecommunications or telecontrol option.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a related field including experience with test equipment, digital and analog circuit troubleshooting and repair.
- Experience with microprocessor and personal computers.
- A valid BC Driver’s License, and the ability to provide 24/7 standby coverage.
- Ability to read prints and skillful use of precision tools and equipment.
- Experience with equipment integration and industrial networking.
- Demonstrate ability to work independently and possess decision making abilities.
