The Telcom Engineer will be responsible for design engineering and project planning/execution in support of the clients Telecommunication Transport Network, including inside plant, outside plant, signals, protocols, and systems, plus other duties as assigned.

Location
: Role may be remote, however preference will be given to candidates in The Woodlands, TX, New Orleans, LA, or Little Rock, AR, as this is where the client sites are.

Day travel and occasional overnight travel are required to adequately support requirements of this position.


Primary Duties & Areas of Responsibility:

  • Provide Telecom engineering services for over 420 sites within Eastern Region, including, but not limited to: office buildings, operational centers, power generating stations, substation control houses, telecom shelters, microwave radio shelters, equipment cabinets, etc., all connected by over 1300 route miles of various types of fiber cable and 31 digital microwave hops
  • Support client’s operational companies through project scoping; estimate development; design and execution of new OPGW, ADSS, and underground fiber optic cable construction
  • Design and implement new, time division multiplexed and packet transport communication systems on fiber optic cable and/or digital microwave systems, aligned to meet all identified needs as well as anticipated future service requirements
  • Interact with and serve a variety of internal customers
  • Plan, develop, and deliver detailed engineering packages to drive and support the actions of skilled craftsmen in the field as they install, test, and turn up fiber optic cable plant and communication systems
  • Plan and implement changes to infrastructure and systems using clients change management processes, create supporting documentation such as detailed work procedures, coordinate and obtain outage clearances from various entities, etc.
  • Create and maintain GIS information, system design, and provisioning records in clients Telecom’s operational support system
  • Adhere to and continually improve clients Telecom Engineering design standards, being aware of master sources, such as the National Electric Code, the National Electric Safety Code, Telcordia, industry best practices, etc.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and technicians to create and implement the best solutions possible within the framework of any given project, looking for relationships beyond the immediate project scope to identify mutual dependencies


Required Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, a related field or 4 additional years of experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.
  • Relevant professional certifications or licenses are a plus,
  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of telecom engineering such as:

    • Inside/outside cable plant design and construction,
    • System-level design of telecom transmission systems,
    • Time-division multiplexing systems such as SONET, 1/0 DCS, channel banks,
    • Packet-based transport, namely MPLS, and 5) system and service documentation.
  • Have a working knowledge of IP.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, Visio, Outlook, and WebEx.
  • Have direct experience using a GIS database system, such as Connect Master, ArcGIS, Small World, etc.
  • Knowledge of electronic work management systems, such as Service NOW, Remedy, etc.
  • Familiarity with telecommunication operational support systems, such as Connect Master, MetaSolv, TIRKS, etc.
  • Be skilled in construction and design considerations regarding outside plant, such as right-of-way, materials and techniques used, creation of job specifications, working with and directing the actions of vendors, etc.
  • Be respectful of client’s safety culture and employ safety principles when working on new projects and improving existing systems and infrastructure.
  • Be familiar with electric utility organization, operation, and regulation.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and work effectively in a collaborative team environment
  • Excellent researching, decision-making and organizational skills are required

  • Proven analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Work independently and follows through on assignments with minimal direction while keeping the team informed

Pay Range:

Pay Range $78,000.00 – $120,000.00 – $162,000.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
