The Telecommunications Technician will perform, with intermediate supervision and clearly defined procedures, basic level installation, maintenance and repair of various Telecommunications related equipment, using accepted practices and procedures. Perform basic installation, system testing, troubleshooting, issue resolution, and produce required documentation. Work to gain knowledge and understanding of various Telecommunications technologies and business processes. Analyze possible solutions using standard procedures. Exhibit a positive, collaborative attitude working in a team environment. Must be accountable for one’s own work and advancement. All above activities will be performed with an emphasis on safety for yourself and others.

Essential job functions, include but may not be limited to:

  • Perform basic entry-level installation, maintenance and repair of various Telecommunications related equipment.
  • PC proficient. IE Windows OS, Office.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and system testing.
  • Use appropriate applications for work management and trouble tickets.
  • Participate in cross-training of various telecommunications systems.
  • Work to acquire an understanding of Telecommunications business unit and customer requirements.
  • Adapt to changing work schedules and priorities.
  • Maintains field documentation in accordance with defined policies and procedures.
  • Assist in database and record keeping systems for work and asset tracking.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology or technical degree or certificate in related field, OR
  • High School Diploma/GED with 4 years of related experience.


Experience:

Telecomm Technician – Grade 04

  • Two years technical or related field (In addition to any experience identified above).


Telecomm Technician Sr. – Grade 05

  • Five years technical or related field (In addition to any experience identified above).


License/Certifications:

  • Maintain a valid driver license at all times.
  • Driving of company vehicles is required including city, highway and off-road travel as necessary.


Additional Qualifications:

  • Travel in state as required 25 – 75% per position, 5% overnight.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • A strong electronics / telecommunications aptitude is desired.

  • Telecommunications Technical Proficiency:
    Has a basic understanding and is able to demonstrate basic support skills in one or more of the following areas:


    • Radio Systems –
      Demonstrate understanding of Land Mobile Radio Systems, basic electronics, and antenna systems of 450Mhz Motorola Conventional and 800Mhz P25 repeater systems also mobiles, portables, consoles and Point to Multi point 800 and 900Mhz EMS/Scada radio systems. Exhibit the ability to configure basic computer hardware components, wiring techniques and perform vehicle installations.

    • Transport Systems –
      Exhibit a working knowledge of telecommunications transport systems, including Aviat in 6 and 10ghz MW systems. Multiplexers include Alcatel SAR (MPLS), Ciena (Carrier ethernet/MPLS) and SEL Icons (OC). Also knowledge of scada Cisco CGR. Demonstrate understanding of fiber optic cable, splice methods, installation and maintenance.

    • Voice / Video Systems –
      Demonstrate understanding of Polycom voice / video systems as well as Cisco IP telephony. Exhibit understanding of telecommunications wiring requirements, installation methods, and industry standard practices.

    • Networking Systems –
      Demonstrate understanding of LAN/WAN system requirements in the installation and maintenance of routers, switches, wireless access points, and related equipment. Exhibit working knowledge of networking wireless devices, digital terminating equipment and various structures wiring requirements and industry standard practices. Demonstrate understanding of IP systems and architecture.

    • Site Infrastructure
      – Exhibit a working knowledge of telecom shelters, including HVAC, DC charger systems, AC power, propane generators, coax, waveguide, antennas, and general site maintenance.
