Senior Data Engineer

Role & Responsibilities

The Snr Data Engineer role is critical for Medair’s global data architecture. As a key member of the Global IM Team, this role includes building and optimizing Medair’s data and data pipeline architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for cross functional teams. The role also includes providing support in solving technical issues, sourcing data across the organisation as well as collaborating closely with the Business Intelligence Specialist.

Project Overview

Global ITS provides Medair with centralised governance, strategy, direction, innovation and support in the use of the information technologies that amplify the people to people strategy. Global ITS provides a centralised approach to ensure cost efficiency and integration, including country programs in the strategic design of systems, and delivers services locally where practical to ensure that the day-to-day needs of our GSO and country program colleagues are met.

Workplace & Working conditions

Position located in Beirut (or Zahle) Lebanon with occasional travel to the field if necessary. The role is open for applicants based in Lebanon – a valid work permit is required.

Starting Date / Initial Contract Details

As soon as possible. Full time, 12 months, possibility for extension.

Key Activity Areas

Data Engineering

• Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
• Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
• Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
• Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL or similar ‘big data’ technologies.
• Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency, and other key business performance metrics.
• Design, develop and maintain data integration solutions using tools such as Dell Boomi and technologies such as ETL (Extract, Transform, Load), APIs, and data pipelines.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand their data integration needs and develop solutions that meet their requirements.
• Monitor and troubleshoot data integration processes to ensure that they are functioning properly and efficiently. Work with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
• Keep our data separated and secure across national boundaries wherever our data is located (on-premise & cloud-providers).
• Create data tools for future analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative NGO leader.
• Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.

Product Management

• Translate business requirements into logical, component-based technical designs.
• Perform administration / configuration / data migration / integration duties on select systems in accordance with project objectives.
• Create and design technical specification documentation
• Drive resolution of issues that come up during the deployment phase of projects
• Implement or oversee implementation, coordinating tests and observing initiation of the system to validate performance

Data Quality Management

• Ensure accuracy of input data, output data and data migration
• Evaluate issue patterns and operational functions to plan and recommend process improvement and system upgrades

User Support and Training

• Provide second level support to users, train users accordingly.
• Stay up to date: use existing training, (community) resources, and develop skills and knowledge about the latest features.

Functional Analysis Vendor Management

• Work with contracted service providers and other technical groups to resolve data-related issues

Innovation/changes

• This position requires an awareness of current developments in technology, methodologies (Agile/Scrum, etc), modern architectures and services such as Apache Kafka (event-driven architecture), Snowflake, Data Vault modelling, etc and the ability to identify gaps in the process and propose improvements within the systems workflow or business processes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree required with relevant experience.
• Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written). French desirable.

Experience

• At least 5 years in advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) and working familiarity with various databases.
• Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures, and data sets.
• At least 3 years’ experience in constructing and enhancing the integration of data between various applications using Dell Boomi, Informatica, or SSIS.
• Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets
• Knowledge of enterprise business systems (ERP, e.g., Unit 4 and analytics, in areas of Finance, Logistics and /or HR (desirable)
• Experience using helpdesk/ticketing systems such as Jira
• Business Process Mapping (BPMN 2.0, UML, etc.)
• System integration and Data Analysis (awareness of APIs, Data Modelling techniques)
• Programming skills desirable: SQL, JavaScript, Java, etc.
• Experience in developing processes and creating end-user documentation
• Basic understanding of Project Management tools and general project steps
