| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The primary objective of the UNCW Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment within which students, faculty, and staff can live, learn, and work. The department is comprised of three divisions – Support Services, Investigations, and Operations. The officers who staff these divisions are duly sworn, certified, armed, and empowered with the same authority as other local law enforcement officers in the State of North Carolina as regulated by the North Carolina Department of Justice. Telecommunicators, program managers and command-level personnel provide administrative support for the various divisions. The department also employs full-time and part-time security guards who assist community members by performing building patrols, area patrols, escorts, and access to other departmental services. |

| Brief Summary of Work for this Position | The primary purpose of this Telecommunicator position is to work within the Communications Center of the UNCW University Police Department. Rotating shifts (weekends/holidays included as they fall within the schedule) are required. Monitoring and operation of all communications equipment maintaining contact with all field personnel and other enforcement agencies by means of radio, phone lines, and Division of Criminal Information terminals. Keeping the steady flow of communication between the general public, department employees, and other law enforcement agencies. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. |
| Preferred education, professional skills and experience | Previous experience as a Telecommunicator or work in a related field where radio systems and telephones are utilized simultaneously. Preferred familiarity with working in a law enforcement or similar setting, in particular the dispatch aspect. Possess the skills and willingness to communicate and positively interact with the public. Having quick and precise typing skills is essential to being able to effectively perform the job as Telecommunicator. Skills related to producing Daily Police Bulletins, memos for officers, and some reports are all part of the Telecommunicator’s responsibilities. Possess the ability to multi-task by checking computer files as needed, as well as the ability to listen for radio traffic, telephone calls, and various alarms and communicate the same. The ability to read the written orders and read messages coming from agencies sending messages through the DCI Computer Terminal. |
