Public Safety Telecommunications Technician

Installs, maintains and troubleshoots the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) technology systems in the Department of Public Safety. Systems include the department’s two-way radios, Computer-aided Dispatch (CAD) systems, 911 call handling platform, and other security technologies (video surveillance, access control, alarm, etc.).

The Technician programs radios, maintains inventory databases, processes billing for equipment and services, and coordinates preventative and emergency maintenance. This position also oversees the day-to-day activities of the PSAP systems by attending meetings and serving as the university’s liaison with other regional telecommunications managers in the area. The Technician participates in departmental/divisional projects as the radio frequency (RF) subject matter expert and advises on permanent and temporary deployment of security technology. Duties also include the preparation and delivery of reports, analysis of data and recommendation of improvements to systems and processes.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience providing RF two-way radio, IP network and telecommunications support or servicing RF two-way radio, IP network and telecommunications equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer programming, operations and equipment.
  • General knowledge of troubleshooting and routine maintenance procedures.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Desired Qualifications

  • Possession of FCC General Radio Telephony License (GROL).
  • General knowledge of telecommunications billing and ordering procedures.
  • Ability to identify problems, analyze information, and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings or blueprints.

Additional Information:

This position is subject to 24-hour call in and works during home football games and other special events.
