The Sr. Network Engineer collaborates with other team members and groups to identify and develop scalable network designs, solutions and policy recommendations. They ensure continued smooth operations of the global network infrastructure, support internal application groups by identifying and presenting their network-impacting requirements to the rest of the network engineering team, and support and lead implementation of growing network infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and maintenance of network communications.
  • Uses knowledge of LAN/WAN systems to help design and install internal and external networks.
  • Contribute to University vision and direction by helping improve technical practices and procedures.
  • Establish, maintain, and increase client satisfaction through professional, courteous, and caring technical service.
  • Identify client needs and design, propose, and implement solutions, including writing recommendations, specifying equipment, and assisting with or directly writing proposals and presenting the network impacting requirements to the rest of the network engineering team.
  • Coordinate installation, upgrade, or deployment projects, including providing on-site direction for other network engineers.
  • Collaborate with other team members and groups to identify and develop scalable network designs, solutions and policy recommendations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve wired and wireless network issues.
  • Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
  • Assist other network engineers in troubleshooting difficult or time-sensitive problems.
  • Perform tasks associated with the engineering of network systems used in data communications services, including fiber optic, twisted pair, IP systems, switches, routers and LAN/WAN Systems.
  • Prepare various documents such as work orders, purchase orders, records equipment, facilities and systems, and budget paperwork.
  • Participate in on-call rotation which will include evening and weekends.
  • It is expected that the employee will actively continue network education including certifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalency and at least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area. (One year of education is equivalent to two years experience).

Preferences

DEPARTMENT MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Actively participates in monitoring services end to end for a complete picture of system health and availability.
  • Experience with VPN administration – Palo Alto, Cisco, other firewall vendors.
  • Thorough knowledge of Firewall Administration and best practices.
  • Experience with IT Procurement process.
  • Solid Linux background and skills.
  • Experience with BIND.

PREFERENCES:

  • Network Certification such as CCNA, CCNP and or CCDA.
