ENGINEERING DESIGN TECHNICIAN

The Position

We are currently seeking a qualified Engineering Design Technician for our growing Markham office. This candidate will be responsible for the production of computer aided drawings from concept to final design for underground infrastructure projects. In addition to drawing preparation, the candidate will also support the Project Manager with design tasks, site visits, and meeting attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate work activities with Project Managers / Coordinators, CAD Designers, Structures Designers, survey staff, Project Engineers;
  • Import AutoCAD, TIF, or other file formats and hard copy maps to create electronic base maps for road bases;
  • Buried utility outside plant drawings in accordance with CSA and ESA;
  • Aerial utility outside plant drawings in accordance with CSA and ESA (potential future activity);
  • Aerial utility outside plant design in accordance with CSA and ESA (potential future activity); Wind and ice loading; Separations and clearances; Detailed sag, tension, pole loading calculations;
  • Complete conflict assessments related to existing client facilities with proposed road/bridge infrastructure.
  • Design duct formation, duct occupancy, and duct alignment in accordance with client standards.
  • Prepare plan and profile drawings in CAD which may include but are not limited to duct formation, duct occupancy, duct alignment, manhole and equipment box locations, and pole attachments in accordance with client standards and Practices;
  • Prepare detailed drawings of reinforced concrete structures such as utility maintenance chambers, pad-mounted interfaces and retaining walls for example (elevations, details, and sections);
  • Prepare detailed drawings of structural steel components such as conduit hanger systems attached to bridge structures for example (elevations, details, and sections);
  • Prepare rebar schedules, Bills of Materials;

· Prepare draft manhole Inspection Reports;

  • Work will be reviewed by a Professional Engineer;
  • Provide detailed training to newer staff;
  • Lead in the continued development, implementation, and ongoing quality control requirements for the team;
  • Participate in the ongoing development of design standards and methodologies to further develop the design and operational efficiencies;
  • Interface directly with clients and other third-party resources to discuss, review and provide consultations for project requirements;
  • Attend site meetings with clients or third-parties as required at the direction of the Project Coordinator, including updating the PC clearly and in detail on the outcome of the meeting
  • Adhere to strict project budgets and client deliverable dates;
  • Other activities as required.

Requirements

  • Working experience with AutoCAD 2010 or later is mandatory;
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • The ability to deal with multiple projects and conflicting deadlines and get along with people;
  • Graduate from an accredited post-secondary technical educational institution with minimum 2 years of work experience;
  • Strong knowledge/expertise in structural detailing/drawing of reinforced concrete structures and structural steel elements;
  • Working knowledge of concrete and steel structural design principles;
  • Familiar with industry codes, engineering practices, standards, and construction methods.

Preferred Skills

· Experience with utility companies (i.e. electric, gas, telecom, fiber optic);

· Previous consulting engineering work experience.

The Location

Planview Utility Services has 3 offices – Markham, London and Ottawa. Our clients and their projects are based throughout the province. The reporting office for this position is in Markham.
