Our Datacom and Specialty Solutions (DSS) team designs an extensive product line serving customers in telecommunications, datacom, hyperscalers, data center and storage applications.
The key responsibility of the Automation Project Engineer in the DSS group is to design and develop automated machinery and tooling to support the mass production of high-speed cables and connectors. The Automation Project Engineer will lead the machine development process including sourcing equipment, quoting, mechanical design and adhering to the project delivery schedule. This person will oversee the entire project from initial concept through transition to global mass production sites. The core projects will be focused on automation and deployment of full manufacturing solutions.
The Automation Project Engineer serves as an expert resource to production and maintenance on new equipment and system installation.
What You Will Do In Your Role
- Provides assembly feasibility (Design for Manufacturability) and equipment cost estimates to the new product development team.
- Works with engineering department to determine design complete dates
- Designs new cable manufacturing machinery utilizing the Siemens NX CAD software
- Assists in developing and executing the machine qualification plan
- Provides technical support for the launch of equipment produced by the Automation Team
- Traveling to mass production facilities for machine install and qualification, training of technicians and operators to ensure the proper and safe operation of equipment and developing re-tooling strategies
- Attends Design Reviews and PFMEA’s while working with design engineers to improve current and future designs of automation
- Tracks projects using internal methods for summarizing component cost, labor, and lead time
- Develops accurate, up-to-date BOM’s and spare tooling lists
- Understands, supports, and contributes to complete projects according to internal product development procedures, TQM and IS/QS-9000 requirements
- Embraces Six Sigma, International Standards Organization (ISO) and Environmental, and/or Health and Safety (EH&S) Management Systems by following stated policies and procedures
- International Travel: Up to 20% per year
The Experience You Will Bring
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering Technology or Manufacturing
- Mechanical Design Experience – simulations, prototypes, design from initial concept to production
- Understanding of GD&T and knowledge of where to preform tolerance analysis
- Designed automated manufacturing and assembly systems
- Experience managing Project timelines, setting priorities and completing projects in systematic and timely manner
- Proficient in Siemens NX or comparable 3D CAD package
- Experience performing testing, observe results and make corrections
What Will Put You Ahead
- Knowledge of Machine Building techniques / standards
- Experience working with global teams
- Experience working with interconnect or cables
- Design experience in the electronics industry.
- Toolmaking Knowledge (Understanding of manual and CNC machining capabilities)
- Mechanical and Electrical Systems design knowledge
- Experience reading electrical schematics
- Foreign Language Competency: Mandarin or Spanish
