General Summary:
The Cable Locator Technician is responsible for the correct, safe and efficient locating of underground telecommunications facilities. The Cable Locator also assists Construction Technicians as needed.
· This position will be responsible for receiving tickets from the 811 system from which they will prioritize and plan the driving route that best meets the demands by location and meeting a standard response time of 48 hours. This position requires the employee to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and use a company provided laptop to document and close all tickets.
· This position will use locator equipment at the job site which weighs between 5-10 lbs and must walk on uneven terrain. Employee must work under minimal supervision and maintain daily work records.
· Duties include, but are not limited to: reading circuit and street maps to chart routes, communicating necessary information to other parties, assist underground crews as requested, enter manholes as needed, complete ticket requests and ensure closure through 811 system.
· Receives routine orders and engineering prints, indicating how cable is to be placed
- Places cable within and maintains underground conduit system and performs construction tasks as required
- Places direct buried cable using digging and trenching equipment.
- Maintains right-of-way and restores all disturbed surfaces, such as concrete and pavement surfaces; trims trees and performs other landscaping duties as necessary;
- Operates automotive and construction equipment and performs other assigned duties related to cable and conduit placement;
- Uses tools and work equipment, including hoisting, digging, and trenching equipment, properly; ensures that all tools and equipment are in good working order, maintained, and stored; reports defective tools and equipment for replacement or repair;
- Submits time reports, truck inspection reports, mileage and gas tickets, material charge-outs and check-ins, and other clerical forms or other required procedures; and
- Works with the awareness of the considerable hazards connected with the construction and maintenance of outside plant facilities, including falls, electric shock or flash, falling objects, and traffic; uses protective equipment and safety practices, attends and participates in all system safety and training meetings.
· Our 48 hour turnaround time on all locates means we generally work the day after holidays and some weekends, as needed.
Personnel Specifications
Education/Experience
High school degree required; Knowledge and skills usually acquired through specialized training and/or one year of experience in telephone plant operations, construction, and equipment maintenance preferred.
Job Knowledge
Understanding of plant operations, specification sheets, staking sheets, and cable records.
Related Skills
Operate various vehicles and construction equipment. Undertake heavy physical workload. Work under supervision in occasional stressful or pressure situations. Pay close attention to detail and schedule.
Position Relationships
The Construction Maintenance worker reports to the construction supervisor, or to the plant manager.
Internal
Establishes and maintains close relations with other construction and plant personnel. Coordinates with other telco staff on construction and plant projects.
External
Communicates regularly with subscribers and community on service problems and new projects.

Pay: $17.44 – $24.34 per hour
