Public Safety Department provides safety and security to the campus community and continually strives to foster a higher quality of life and a safe and secure environment where diverse, social, cultural and academic values are allowed to develop and prosper.
Campus Security Officer promotes campus safety; develops, creates and administers an effective procedure for notifying appropriate campus departments of incidents outside of normal business hours that require immediate response to campus; assists with hiring, training and scheduling student employees; protects persons and property as well as safeguards the rights of individuals and the University community collectively; supervises building access and security including policy and procedure development; develops and maintains a professional relationship with personnel from law enforcement and related agencies and provides additional emergency services to campus; acts as the primary University investigator for allegations of sexual assaults that are reported to have occurred on campus.
Employment is contingent upon a successful criminal background check conducted through the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Candidates must also possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a driving history background check.
- Patrol Duties: Preparing reports for all incidents that occur on campus during scheduled shift; reviewing reports prepared by student officers; providing preventative patrol of all university property; detecting and taking appropriate action regarding emergency maintenance deficiencies or any potentially hazardous condition; providing emergency medical assistance on campus as required; assisting campus motorists and taking appropriate action if traffic control is needed; acting as liaison and responsible University official when local emergency personnel respond on campus; performing foot patrol, motorized patrol; providing general security protection for the campus community; authorizing access of University facilities during assigned shift in the accordance with University policy; patrolling interior and exterior of campus buildings and controlling access; investigating all reports of crimes against persons and property occurring on the University campus and all property owned leased or occupied by BSU; enforcing University conduct and security policies; providing parking enforcement as needed. Percent of Time: 35%
- Communication Center: Supervising day to day operation in communications center; maintaining communication information system (CIS); providing dispatch training to student officers; maintaining current knowledge of all closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and providing training to student officers on the use of paid systems; handling all lost and found property in a timely manner. Percent of Time: 25%
- Student Officer hiring/training/supervision: Assisting with interviewing, hiring and training student officers; coaching, disciplining and evaluating student officers; providing practical training for student officers; directing the activities of student officers working during the assigned shift; assisting with scheduling of student officers for daily shifts and events. Percent of Time: 15%
- Building security and access control: Assisting with the development of a campus-wide building access control program; working closely with campus scheduling office to ensure a coordinated effort to maintain building security through access control; providing access control training to student officers and devising a system for monitoring the effectiveness and knowledge. Percent of Time: 15%
- Sexual Assault Liaison: Working closely with external sexual assault victim service organizations and cooperatively coordinating an appropriate campus response to reported incidents; developing and maintaining student training materials and policy regarding response to reports of sexual assault on campus; creating and distributing materials on campus that outline resources, University policy and procedures relating to campus sexual assaults; providing programming to the University community regarding person safety directed at the prevention of sexual assault. Percent of Time: 10%
- At least two (2) years of experience as a Public Safety Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, or Peace Officer. An Associate degree in Law Enforcement, Paralegal or related field substitute for one (1) year of experience. A Bachelor’s degree in any of the above listed areas substitute for two (2) years of experience.
- Experience and knowledge of standard law enforcement practices, policies, and procedures.
- Experience hiring, training, supervising, and providing work direction to others.
- Knowledge and experience with Communication Center operations.
- Knowledge of local, State, and federal laws.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
- Must possess and maintain current emergency first aid certification.
- A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

- In accordance with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MinnState) Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, faculty and staff driving on college/university business, who use a rental or state vehicle, shall be required to complete a vehicle Use Agreement form and conform to MinnState’s vehicle use criteria and consent to motor vehicle records check annually.
