Description
This position performs the construction and installation of assigned communications equipment at various locations throughout the KCS US communications operations rail network. This critical position ensures all assigned railroad communications systems are properly communicating to ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains across the US KCS rail network.
Accountabilities
- Installs assigned wayside radio systems and Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) readers.
- Installs assigned base station radio systems, including VHF voice radios, PTC radios, CTC radios, DP, EOT, RCL message repeaters, and microwave radio systems.
- Installs assigned camera and WIFI systems with associated IP network and fiber or wireless backhaul solutions.
- Installs assigned physical plant infrastructure, including power systems (AC generators, DC charging and batteries), communications structures and enclosures, site fencing, grading and grounding.
- Exemplifies KCS Vision, Values, and Culture interactions with coworkers, business partners, customers, and stakeholders.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Required
- Associate degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in a job related major field of study or;
- Minimum two (2) years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Maintain a Class A Commercial Drivers License for GVW greater than 10,000 pounds.
Preferred
- Previous communications technician or construction experience with KC Southern.
- FCC radio operator license – optional.
Working Conditions
- Business travel is an essential requirement of this job. Employees must be able and willing to travel away from their primary work location over 75% of the time.
- On-call responsibilities are an essential function of this job. Employees must have the ability and willingness to support operations of critically important systems and/or processes 24 hours per day/7 days per week. On-call assignments may include after-hours, weekends and holidays.
- Skilled with abilities to install, maintain and support complex telecommunications systems.
- Ability to travel via driving motorized vehicle.
- Availability during normal working hours plus after hours and weekend duties.
- Ability to install complete and test Communications systems.
- Ability to complete routine inspections and periodic maintenance.
- Ability to support, troubleshoot and repair system issues.
