Contract Safety Manager Lead – 12 Month Contract Job Detail

Contract: Safety Manager Lead

Duration: 12 – 18 months

Rate: £600 – £650 per day (inside IR35)

Location: Taunton, Somerset

Remote work 3x days onsite and 2x days remote initially for 3 months and then more flexibility

Please note this is NOT a health and safety role, this is 100% a leadership role and to apply you must have recognised safety engineering qualification and leadership experience in safety NOT just a practitioner

The ideal candidate will be from a military OR safety leadership background and someone who is confident and able to adapt quickly.

The client already has a good safety set up but needs someone to show them “what good looks like” and show them how to be sustainable, this is not a generic role and although your working with an experience team they do need someone who in 18 months can walk out the door and leave a sustainable safety function and plan, where they can continue to build the current safety culture and leave a better permeant team.

The Safety Manager is responsible for leading and developing the Safety Team and its functions in order to meet business needs now and in the future.

This will include:

  • Actively managing team and individual staff development;
  • Continuous development and refinement of a Safety roadmap in conjunction with senior stakeholders to set out the short and long term delivery of safety management and culture.
  • The development, operation and continuous improvement of the Safety Management Plan (SMP) which is the policy and procedures for the safety management of all Products, Systems and Services (PSS) that have the potential to cause direct or indirect harm to individuals, property or the environment.
  • Organisational delivery against the SMP and agreed roadmap.

The Safety Manager is responsible for the development, operation and continuous improvement of the Safety Management Plan including:

  • Leading the implementation of the Safety Management Plan;
  • Safety target & criteria;
  • Confirming change has gone through due process and governance;
  • Safety process and associated documentation;
  • Promotion of Safety Culture;
  • Reporting on Safety performance;
  • Ensuring the Safety Management System is implemented;
  • Producing and managing safety documentation in preparation for the SCB and SB meetings;
  • Quorate member of Safety Management Review Panels for Safety Cases.

Other duties:

  • The Safety Manager Lead will be a budget holder for External Safety Support Services
  • Line management and active development of up to 3 direct reports.
  • The Safety Manager will have functional management responsibilities for any external Safety Engineers engaged through contractual arrangements.
  • The Safety Manager will work across teams Divisions and grades in the day-to-day course of their work.
  • Lead the implementation of the Safety Management Plan throughout the whole business.
  • Lead on the establishment, implementation, improvement and measurement of a just safety culture.
  • Undertake the ongoing development and review of the safety performance. This will include developing effective measures at the system, process, product, audit and corporate performance levels, that drive the right behaviours and create the conditions for improved safety performance.
  • Confirm changes to PSS have gone through due Safety process and governance.
  • Establish and review safety policies and processes, including ensuring the required elements are understood, by the required stakeholders and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Lead on the promotion of a Safety Culture across the business, including managing the ongoing campaign plan to maintain awareness and understanding.
  • Act as a focal point for safety management
  • Manage and maintain contracts with external organisations in support of Safety Management, leading on the task management and performance management of the supplier.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience of leading the development and management of a Safety System within an organisation and improving their safety culture
  • Experience of leading and developing a team of Safety professionals
  • Formal training or qualifications in Safety Management/System Safety Engineering (for example, MSc or postgraduate Diploma in Safety Systems Critical Engineering or a postgraduate certificate in Safety Systems Engineering)
  • Experience in Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) and the creation of Safety Cases
  • Minimum of 5 years functional Safety Management experience/exposure

Desirable Skills:

  • Working knowledge of DEFSTAN00-056
  • Experience of embedding Safety Management Systems within the Defence or Maritime Industries
