Emergency Communications Call Taker

Job Description

This position is to prepare incumbents for work in the Emergency Communications Series devoted to emergency 911, police, and fire telecommunications, non-emergency call taking, and police and fire dispatch communications. Incumbents will be trained to perform semi-skilled and technical work in answering calls requesting emergency service; providing routine, non-technical information and referring all other inquiries; extracting call information and, when instructed, providing pre-arrival instructions based on protocols.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives and responds to emergency 911 and non-emergency public safety calls; obtains information provided by callers and disseminates to responders; prioritizes actions; remains on calls as required to provide timely and pertinent information.
  • Enters, deletes, verifies and queries criminal justice information system data on behalf of law enforcement agencies; communicates pertinent system information to officers and agencies.
  • Receives general inquiries and provides routine, non-technical information; refers non-routine calls to appropriate staff member or department.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED, one year of relevant experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications

  • CPR certification (to be obtained during training)
  • Division of Criminal Information (DCI) /National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification (to be obtained during training)


Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and report to work during emergency and disaster events to include inclement weather.

The length of the hiring and selection process varies; the training academy is scheduled to start on 01/26/2023 (tentative). The process may include the following:

Positions in this class typically require: fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Working Conditions:
Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
