Position Summary
The Network Engineer will support new designs and enhancements for Armstrong’s MPLS network, layer-3 routed network, DOCSIS and GPON last mile networks, DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) transport network, and others. This position will also have a significant role in the development of new service delivery methods, core network design modifications, and development of new technologies.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Work collaboratively with the Engineering, Innovation & Technology & Technical Operations departments, including other network engineers, operations engineers, sales engineers, customers, vendors, technicians, various levels of management, and others.
  • Generate Work Request materials that accurately, thoroughly, and efficiently detail all work to be completed by Technical Operations, System Operations, and others.
  • Assist and guide Network Technicians and Operations Engineers in the installation, configuration, turn up, and modification of network equipment.
  • Participate in network planning and network deployment strategies.
  • Create and implement Methods of Procedure and project work plans. Must have a strong focus on quality and network sustainability (99.999% up time).
  • Support Service Provider threat mitigation platforms (DDoS), firewalls and VPN appliances (IPSec).
  • Engineer network methods that are repeatable, scalable, and easily deployable across Armstrong’s network.
  • Create detailed documentation of Armstrong’s network systems and topologies – new and existing.
  • Provide assistance to the Operations team for troubleshooting and repair of network systems and equipment.
  • Support Armstrong’s Network Management Systems and help with additions/modifications as needed.
  • Provide direction and guidance for policy and procedure creation related to Armstrong’s engineering Best Practices and network design.
  • Act as an ambassador and promoter of Armstrong and Armstrong’s products.
  • Other related tasks as assigned.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 – 5+ years as a Network Engineer in a service provider environment or large enterprise environment. Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Computer Science from an accredited college or university is preferred. Experience in network operations is a plus.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and apply strong design knowledge and understanding of IP networks to complete network designs and augments.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with various networking standards and protocols such as MPLS, DWDM, SONET, OSPF, EIGRP, ISIS, iBGP, eBGP Ethernet, VLAN tagging, spanning tree protocols, DNS, DHCP, NAT, CGN, HTTP, FQDN, SIP, MGCP, RTP, and others.
  • Knowledge and experience with GPON and passive optical network topologies. Experience with related provisioning methodologies is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with Packet Cable Telephony and Voice over IP technologies. This includes but is not limited to SIP trunks, soft switch feature servers, trunking gateways, and session border controllers.
  • Knowledge and experience with DOCSIS and Cable Modem Termination Systems. Preferably with DOCSIS 3.0, upstream channel bonding, Business Services over DOCSIS, and DOCSIS provisioning methodologies.
  • Possess and demonstrate the ability to work independently under minimal supervision; must be a self-starter that can work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must have strong communications skills, both verbal and written, to communicate design criteria and project plans to others inside and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment. This includes the willingness and desire to share information, work collaboratively, and help others – both inside and outside of the engineering group.
  • Must be available to support the business when necessary which includes overnight travel and/or non-standard shift assignments (maintenance windows).
  • Cisco certification (or equivalent vendor certification) is preferred.
  • Possess and demonstrate the ability to work independently under minimal supervision; must be a self-starter that can work on multiple projects simultaneously.
