Purpose

The Enterprise Network Engineer III will provide mentorship and senior technical engineering support to design, build, and operate the university’s enterprise and departmental networks, while providing advanced technical expertise and troubleshooting for departmental customers. Develop, deploy, and operate systems and processes to improve university network operations, security, and resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate systems and processes to improve the university’s enterprise wireless network operations, security, and resilience.
  • Understand end-user needs and create technical solutions utilizing wireless network technologies for classrooms, R&D labs, and event venues.
  • Evaluate new network technologies, conduct proof of concept implementations, create run book definitions, and lead pilot deployments.
  • Collaborate with extended network team to anticipate technological changes and automate infrastructure deployment, fault detection, standardized operations, and life cycle management.
  • Collaborate on new building and renovation constructions projects.
  • Provide escalation support for complex network designs, troubleshooting, and after-hours on-call support. Driving university owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this position. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157.
  • Other related functions as assigned. 

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen, resident, or officially recognized asylee – Applicant selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, deploying, configuring, and operating large scale wireless networks.
  • Experience with Cisco wireless controllers and access points.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IEEE 802.11 standards including .11ac and .11ax (Wi-Fi 5, 6 and 6E).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of wireless security including 802.1x, WPA2, EAP-TLS, PSK, and PKI.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of RF site survey, predictive site survey planning, and optimization.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
  • Intermediate network certifications (e.g. CCNA, CCNP Enterprise) and wireless certifications (e.g. Ekahau Design, Troubleshooting, and Advanced).
  • 7+ years of experience with medium to large enterprise network operations. 
  • Large scale network operations. 
  • Comprehensive understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, Routing and LAN switching) 
  • Experience with Cisco Systems switches, routers, and firewalls (IOS, IOS-XE, NX-OS, ASA, NGFW). 
  • Security design and operations experience including HIPPA/FERPA/PCI compliance and necessary application/protocol analysis.
  • Experience with network automation such as Ansible, AWX, and Zero-touch Provisioning (ZTP). 
  • Experience with Network Access Control (NAC) or Identity based network services (IBNS). 
  • Familiarity with Software Defined Networking implementation. 
  • Higher education work experience 

Driving Required

This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$116,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

  • Monday – Friday between 8am – 5pm, Flextime and remote work as coordinated with supervisor, Occasional weekend or after-hours work for scheduled maintenance and university special events.
