Job Summary:

The primary responsibilities of the Fiber Technician is to support the termination and testing of fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings, analyze and troubleshoot fiber networks, and read and understand network splicing plans. Other duties, responsibilities and qualifications may be required and/or assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Terminate and test all sizes of fiber optic cables.
  • Splice various types and sizes of fiber optic cable including single mode, multimode, stranded and ribbon.
  • Familiar with Fujikura splice machines, Power Meters, OTDRs.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots basic technical problems or issues.
  • Reviews, interprets and works with various maps, network drawings and testing documents.
  • Review and compile raw data from test equipment to submit to customer.
  • Performs daily tests, checks and maintenance of splicing and testing equipment.
  • Performs optical continuity and conformance testing.
  • Work on-call 24/7 schedule to respond to customer outages and emergency responses.
  • Strong attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
  • Willing to travel within a two hour radius of the DMV area.
  • Team player that coordinates and communicates fiber activities with other employees, departments, and management.

Competencies/Skills:

  • Knowledge of fiber optic cable splicing techniques including but not limited to single-fusion, mass-fusion.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic testing including but not limited to power meter, ORL, OTDR, CD and PMD.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic cable types, make-up of fiber optic cables, and manufacturer specifications to prevent damage of cables.
  • Knowledge of various manufacturers OSP and ISP splice enclosures and termination panels.
  • Knowledge of basic telecom outside plant construction practices and fiber network design.
  • Knowledge of basic public right of way and inside plant safety measures.
  • Knowledge of data center security processes and adhere to the measures they put in place·
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good sound decisions based on information given.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Must be able to pass drug test.
  • Sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 75 lbs.; works in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with others and work independently.
  • Ability to climb and work at elevations.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Must have Microsoft Office skills: Outlook, Word, and Excel

Education/Experience:

  • Must possess at least a High School diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Experience: 2-4 years of relevant job experience.

Pay: $50,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year
