Requirements to become a Fiber Splicer:

  • Pass a MVR background check and drug test.
  • Experienced with splicing Large & small count Fiber Cables,, Mid Sheath Cuts.

Tasks Required by a Fiber Splicer:

  • Utilize proper techniques to splice fiber optic cable.
  • Prep/Splice single-mode (SM) and multi-mode (MM) optical fiber cables
  • Troubleshooting of fiber utilizing an OTDR.
  • Strong communication skills required between splicer and tech ops manager so that problems can be addressed as soon as possible.
  • Proper record keeping, and be able to review cable records as necessary.
  • Knowledge, understanding and practice of safety regulations within OSHA, NESC, and NEC, and other construction related guidelines.
  • Maintain equipment and vehicle to a high standard.
  • Work indoors and outdoors as needed.
  • Be able to iterate to the project/construction managers detailed accounts of field activity, both verbal and written.
  • Coordinate with tech ops managers to verify and perform work as directed.
  • Night work as needed for things like node splits.
  • Able to be on call for emergencies involving damaged cable.
  • Must know ribbon fiber.
  • Must know fiber to the home.

Knowledge required by a Fiber Splicer:

  • Telecommunications — Knowledge of transmission and telecommunications systems.
  • Public Safety — Knowledge of keeping work area safe to the public.
  • Computers and Electronics — Knowledge of electronic equipment and computer hardware/software for keeping proper records.
  • Mechanical — Knowledge of optical splicing equipment like a cleaver, splicer and bucket truck.
