Job Purpose: Fiber splicers specialize in installing, repairing, and maintaining fiber optic cables to ensure the quality and timely delivery of telecommunications services to our customers. Individuals in this role are responsible for reading and interpreting schematics and diagrams to splice, terminate, and test fiber-optics. As well as maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing damaged cable and related issues in the outside plant network.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare cable and perform both fusion and mechanical splices for aerial and underground applications; ensure proper bonding and grounding of an aerial and underground plant
- Ensure all splice closures and termination points are airtight and free of moisture
- Install protectors and demarcation equipment at the customer premises
- Install and maintain vaults, mini-vaults, and manholes; identify individual fiber cables at splice and node locations
- Install actives and passives (nodes, amplifiers, taps, splitters, power inserts)
- Perform manual excavations, including utility exposure, transition, and termination
- Perform all work in accordance with industry and Company standards and per all government regulations including OSHA, DOT, FCC, etc.
- Track and enter time for capital projects as required and provide detailed reports of field splicing activity
- Participate in on-call rotation and occasionally performs work during scheduled maintenance windows at nonpeak hours
- Travel to customer sites, project areas, business-related events, and other Ritter Communications locations
- Read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and cable schematics, fiber count reports, and verification reports
- Utilize all functions of RF meters, optical meters, spectrum analyzer, TDR, OTDR, volt/ohm/amp meters, and monitoring software
- Performs other duties as assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the responsibilities of this job classification
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Class A CDL is required within 6 months of starting
- 2-3 years of OSP lineman, telecommunications experience preferred with an understanding of telecommunication construction practices
- Up to date on RUS and NEC Standards and FCC, OSHA, and DOT regulations
- Knowledge of fiber and cable installation practices and procedures, and fiber optic splice enclosure handling and maintenance practices
- Understanding of depth and distance requirements, and 90-volt HFC network operation and parameters
- Skill in marking and identifying cable routes/types, and reading cable schematics, fiber count reports, and verification reports
- Knowledge of work area restoration, easement/right of way management, and emergency service restoration procedures and practices
- Requires excellent communication and customer service skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
