Job Summary
Under supervision of the Communications Supervisor, this position operates the Departmental communications centre and provides information to emergency crews on an assigned shift.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Receives all requests for emergency services and directs them appropriately.
- Receives and directs all non-emergency requests, complaints and information appropriately.
- Dispatches appropriate emergency response apparatus.
- Operates proficiently communications centre computers and telecommunications equipment.
- Performs basic computer programming functions, including technical support for local area network.
- Provides the senior responding officer with all appropriate, available information.
- Enters, revises and maintains accurate emergency response information and pre-plans in the computer system.
- Checks and enters incident reports into computer system.
- Maintains the Communications Centre in an orderly, clean condition.
- Performs routine clerical and statistical reporting duties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 education.
- Typing speed of 40 w.p.m.
- Two years’ related work experience.
- Successful completion of, or ability to complete successfully, the Departmental training program.
- Preference will be given to candidates with the following certification:
- APCO Basic Telecommunicator or Public Safety Telecommunicator I
- APCO Fire Communications
- NAED Emergency Medical Dispatch
- NAED Emergency Fire Dispatch
- Knowledge of Department communications protocols and procedures.
- Knowledge of computer programming procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with others via radio, telephone and in written form.
- Ability to operate all equipment in the Communications Centre.
- Ability to use a computer keyboard accurately.
- Ability to handle complex communication functions in stressful situations.
- Ability to read and interpret dangerous goods information.
- Ability to use the EMD priority dispatch system.
- Ability to adapt to changing communication technology.
- Ability to analyze situations effectively and assume initiative for appropriate action in accordance with Department policies and procedures.
- Ability to condense essential information for a concise information relay.
- Ability to work unsupervised and as a member of the Communications Team.
- Ability to effectively work rotating shifts in a 24-hour operation.
- Skill in the operation of a computer with Microsoft Office software.
Weekly Hours: 42 – Shift work is involved.
Salary Range: $68,239.44 to $113,382.72 CAD
