NOTE: The successful candidate will need to be based out of Lloydminster, Wainwright, or Vermillion, Alberta and will be expected to service all three locations.
KEY PURPOSE:
To perform Service Delivery and Assurance functions related to network switching/data elements and provide technical guidance/support to other technical resources.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical
Provide technical guidance and act as a focal point for questions, issues and/or process clarification as requested by other technical resources
Create network change requests with high quality method of procedures and implement planned network changes with detail to quality to minimize unexpected impacts during the implementation
Represent operations at meetings regarding impacts, post incident reviews, resolve or refer to others; ensure testing has been completed and issues identified and/or escalated
Work with other teams and vendors to implement hardware, software, firmware, product change upgrades and commissioning of network elements/services
Provision, commission, test, maintain and repair network elements and services
Provide trouble analysis (i.e. testing, fault isolation and repair functions; logs, alarms, operational measurements)
Develop preventative maintenance procedures and intervals for all areas of network equipment according to standards and/or specifications
Perform preventative maintenance routines for switching/data network elements, power and environment to ensure network reliability; resolve issues or refer to others
Review technical bulletins, assess impacts and communicate to other technical resources
Communications
Initiate and/or respond to queries, discuss trouble details and confirm resolutions directly with external / internal customers
Explain/discuss details regarding progress, issues, applicable charges and promote products and services
Administration
Prepare time and expense reports
Document and administer/track maintenance routines for network elements, power, environment and housekeeping
Provide information on job status, maintain logs and update applicable corporate systems
RESULTS OR OUTCOMES:
Work is performed within defined time requirements to meet company quality standards, to ensure network reliability and to meet customer needs
Preventative maintenance routines and administration responsibilities are completed accurately and timely
Qualifications
Fully qualified Communication Technician Journeyperson (equivalent to current pay at wage step 8 or greater in Wage Schedule 1B, Appendix A)
Formal training or post secondary education in electronics and telecommunications network or equivalent experience
Demonstrated effective decision-making skills while under limited supervision
Demonstrated ability to identify problems, isolate and resolve, take appropriate action, implement solutions or escalate as required
Knowledge of network technology, architecture and elements, and a strong understanding of their associated inter-workings
Knowledge of circuit wiring, transmission parameters and testing
Knowledge of automated provisioning, ticketing, testing and dispatch systems
Knowledge of network maintenance practices / routines on network elements
Knowledge of network installation and repair practices, policies, and procedures
Knowledge of products and services for business and residential customers
Must be able to understand and effectively perform work in accordance with published work plans
Experience in network installation, network maintenance, and/or commissioning of network elements (hardware, software and power) would be an asset
Knowledge of DC power and auxiliary power systems, (i.e.: connecting a generator)
Must be willing to work in any weather conditions
Must be willing and able to work in locations that preclude your ability to return home every day, on an as required basis
Ability to manage a physically demanding workload
Must have a Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
Normal colour vision to work with colour-coded wiring
Must be able to operate hand and power tools, and electronic test equipment, (i.e.: voltmeter)
Must be willing and able to work various shifts as assigned (such as evenings, weekends and statutory holidays), based on business needs
Must be willing and able to work stand-by shifts based on business needs and be on-call in the event of network outages
Must be willing and able to work in confined spaces
Must be willing to travel in small aircraft,aerial tranways, helicopters and/or operate snow cats, etc
Must be willing to travel and have the ability to travel outside of Canada as required
Vendor Certification (CCNA or equivalent) and IP and Optical Transport experience would be an asset
Must follow safe work practices and abide by all safety rules and regulations
Must possess Personal Computer navigational skills
Demonstrated professional oral and written communications skills
Fluent in English
Self-motivated, work well with minimal or no direct supervision
Ability to effectively handle both favourable and unfavourable customer interactions
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaboratively with other departments
Maintain a high level of performance under the pressure of time constraints and a fast-paced changing environment
Demonstrated ability in planning and organizing to meet scheduled deadlines
Commit to continuous learning. Demonstrate the ability to learn and apply learned skills to related situations and complete and pass all related exams
Must meet applicable testing requirements
