Position description
We are pleased to announce the availability of an Telecom/Network Specialist position in the Level 2 Shared Services Section of the Enterprise Operations Services Division. This is an opportunity to utilize your troubleshooting and analytical skills and assist in the Enterprise Network & Server Operations unit. This is a 2nd shift position, Wednesday – Saturday supporting the team responsible for providing Level 2 support and maintenance of Mayo’s enterprise network infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include level2 break-fix support for network infrastructure including remote access (VPN), Firewalls, Wired and wireless networks, routing and switching and DNS services. This position will be part of a team responsible for the 24×7 operational support of Mayo’s enterprise networks. It’s primary role is to perform incident response and support through incident and task tickets based on requests made via the incident management system, phone calls, emails, monitoring tools. Will interfacing with internal IT groups, vendor support service groups, and other external support teams to ensure proper escalation during outages or periods of degraded system performance; producing and maintaining technical documentation; monitoring for and resolving incidents, and appropriate escalation to level 3 support. Participation in On-call coverage is required to provide level2 support for critical systems.
Work will be reviewed for quality, timeliness, and adequacy at predetermined milestones. The successful candidate will have strong technical skills with evidence of excellent problem identification/resolution, and an ability to communicate effectively with customers and other support personnel, and all levels of management. Good knowledge of network hardware is required along with the ability to thrive in an interrupt-driven, multi-tasking environment with limited supervision.
Candidate in this position is required to be located within 30 minutes driving distance of a Mayo Clinic site (Rochester).
Responsible for installation and problem solving related to network infrastructure hardware or software in a multi-vendor environment. This includes working in multiple network infrastructure disciplines including routing, switching, firewalls, remote access, security appliances and wireless. Under general supervision, configures, installs, monitors, diagnoses, and repairs data network equipment across the enterprise. This work will leverage direct access to the devices as well as the use of scripts, and vendor agnostic automation and management tools and/or vendor specific tools. Installs and upgrades equipment according to standards based secure network designs. Prioritizes workload based on established prioritization guidelines, policies, and practices.
Responsible for internal escalation during outages or periods of degraded system performance. Interfaces with customers during outages where the loss of service may have a serious impact on their ability to do their job. Provides input to testing of new products. Provides input to other network staff as well as other IT and Office of Information Security colleagues on supportability of products.
Occasionally works under stressful conditions, participating in implementations and troubleshooting efforts that may have significant patient care and/or financial impact to the organization. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency with basic network and network security monitoring/management tools. Provides assistance with network troubleshooting and remediation of security related incidents or network security investigations in coordination with the Help Desk, Information Technology Operations Center (ITOC) and Security Operations Center.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or an Associate’s degree with a minimum of 2 years professional
technical work experience. A minimum of 4 years of professional technical experience required for individuals
without a degree. Other Qualifications: Knowledge of telecom/network protocols, 7-layer OSI model, software, hardware, and cabling systems. Must be able to work with minimum direction and work effectively in a team environment. Must be customer focused and possess excellent communications and interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of personnel at various levels within and outside the institution. Good organizational and time management skills are required to handle the workload and prioritize repairs. Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills are also a necessity.
Additional qualifications
Knowledge of network routing protocols, Layer 2 switching, firewall and security related concepts, automation/scripting, wireless networking, 7-layer OSI model, software, hardware, and cabling systems, including a basic understanding of network security controls for wired and wireless data networks. Must be able to work with minimum direction and work effectively in a team environment. Must be customer focused and possess excellent communications and interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of personnel at various levels within and outside the institution. Good organizational and time management skills are required to handle the workload and prioritize repairs. Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills are also a necessity.
