Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is seeking an IT Telecommunications Specialist. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Datacenter and Systems Services, the IT Telecommunications Specialist provides advanced support, maintenance and administration of campus-wide technical resources including complex preventive maintenance and advanced troubleshooting. This position will work closely with other units within the IT department to coordinate and perform the installation of computer hardware including workstations, servers, appliances, memory, storage, peripherals, uninterrupted power supplies, KVM systems, Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Datacenter and Systems Services, the IT Telecomm Specialist provides advanced support, maintenance and administration of campus-wide technical resources including complex preventive maintenance and advanced troubleshooting. This position works closely with other units within the OIT department to coordinate and perform the installation of computer hardware including workstations, servers, appliances, memory, storage, peripherals, uninterrupted power supplies, and KVM systems and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience
Five years directly related experience.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery;, to work in confined spaces; to lift and transport telecommunications supplies and equipment; to analyze problems of a technical nature and to develop procedural steps in the solution of problems; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to provide guidance and instruction to others; to work effectively with others; to use hand tools and test equipment; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. 
  • Thorough knowledge of a variety of telecommunication systems. 
  • Skill in systems design work. 
  • Skill and ability to operate computers, communication systems equipment and other mechanical lifting and moving equipment.
Preferences: Preferences:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in information systems or related field a plus.
  • VMware vSphere and VMware View Certifications (VCP, VCA, etc) preferred.
  • A+, Network+ Certifications preferred.
  • Three years of hardware and software support, including at least two years of which include end user support, user training, or system programming.
  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager experience preferred.
  • Microsoft Active Directory Domain Administration experience preferred.
  • Faronics Deep Freeze experience preferred.
  • ManageEngine AD Manager / Self Help Portal experience preferred.
  • Apple Mac OSX, Deploy Studio, ARD, Bootrunner, Winclone experience preferred.
  • Written and verbal skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Physical Demands
  • Required to perform on-call duties for all offered technology services; extensive walking, traversing between and throughout campus buildings. 
  • moderate lifting of heavy equipment.
  • Moderate time spent in cooled computer room environments.
  • Installation of equipment requires climbing ladders, lifting network equipment, working with hand tools and accessing mechanical rooms.
