What the hiring manager says
“The digital consumer market is evolving faster than ever before, driven by shifting consumer behaviour and technological advancements. Such changes are opening up new business opportunities for operators and the wider digital ecosystem. We need a talented analyst who is interested in assessing new trends, technology developments, innovation and disruption in the digital consumer market, and what they mean for ecosystem players. Someone eager to be a thought leader in this space, being a primary point of contact for client engagement and media requests. A persuasive writer and communicator; someone who is not afraid by data or afraid to challenge established thinking with new insights.”
Head of Research and Commercial Content
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced analyst to lead our research content on the Digital Consumer. The Digital Consumer is one of the commercial modules GSMA Intelligence subscribe to. It includes data, surveys and reports. The aim is to help our customers understand key trends and drivers in the digital consumer market, and what they mean for players across the digital ecosystem, while predicting future innovation and disruption trajectories.
Much of the research will draw on our proprietary consumer survey and the strategies and roadmaps of major ecosystem players including device manufacturers (OEMs), telecoms operators, OTT companies, technology suppliers, hyperscalers, and a range of companies providing digital content and services.
Topics to cover include:
- Analysis of consumer behaviour (based on our proprietary consumer survey): new trends, what’s changing and why/how
- Device developments and innovation (smartphones, wearables, gaming devices, smart home devices, XR devices, and beyond)
- 5G for consumers: new use cases, monetisation strategies, business models and what success looks like for operators
- Evolution of Gaming and e-sports, including XR
- Consumer metaverse: current developments and future direction
- eSIM for consumers: devices, services and adoption
- Other consumer use cases: fintech, digital health, digital education and beyond
- Key technology enablers (e.g. 4G/5G, cloud, edge, AI, data analytics)
- How major companies are reshaping their retail strategies and offerings to capture the new B2C opportunities
- New B2C models
- Operator strategies and achievements on B2C services beyond connectivity
The person will be able to leverage our proprietary data sets (mobile, fixed and pay TV, consumer IoT) and our extensive primary research, including consumer surveys and operator surveys to inform and complement forward-looking research. The person will lead the production and development of some of these surveys (i.e. consumer survey). A degree of quantitative analysis is required in all research projects, including understanding revenue and market growth (past growth and future outlook), contributors to growth, reading through the financial results of major players.
You will:
- Lead the content production for the Digital Consumer module. As the module includes both data and reports, you will work on both sides. This involves developing, managing and delivering a pipeline of research reports and developing, managing and supervising a pipeline of data deliverables (including a consumer survey) focused on the Digital Consumer.
- Research outputs will be a mix of long and short form reports.
- Long form reports: Deep dives into specific topics (those outlined above). A forward-looking view is key. A typical long form report includes context, competitive landscape, technology trends, market analysis and outlook, and case studies.
- Short form reports: Quick take responses to market events or product announcements from major ecosystem companies, or quick analysis of major technology breakthroughs. Implications for the various ecosystem actors is always required.
- Other deliverables: blogs, data point videos (highlighting key research findings) and webinars.
In all cases, we are hyper focused on conveying salient insights and implications for major companies across the digital consumer value chain. Data is an enabler, not the story in itself.
- Take a leadership role on individual reports, managing the process end-to-end at high quality, including scoping, drafting, messaging, interaction with internal clients (e.g. GSMA Regions) and ecosystem players (e.g. OEMs, telecoms operators, network/equipment vendors, Internet and OTT companies, hyperscalers, digital content companies). This also involves working with the data team to produce data deliverables for the Digital Consumer module – a supervision role is required.
- Actively engage with key members of the wider GSMA Intelligence team to drive synergies and collaboration. This relationship will be closest with the data forecasting function where the collaboration is two way: research analysts helping to input into and sense check forecast assumptions, data analysts inputting and, in some cases, co-authoring publications. Regular brainstorming and meetings are key.
- Support commercial/sales meetings with existing and prospective clients.
- Contribute to and give presentations to senior management internally, at external events or closed meetings with external stakeholders.
- Grow GSMA Intelligence’s profile as an informed and reliable source of information and insights on the Digital Consumer. This would include tech press outlets, newspapers and broadcasters.
- The role involves other activities beyond the Digital Consumer remit. We support the GSMA Leadership Team with a range of activities including contributions to Strategy Group meetings (GSMA Strategy Group brings together the Chief Strategy Officers of major operators worldwide) and writing the CEO Newsletter that goes to all operator CEOs. We also support MWL across a range of activities.
About You
- Established experience in analysing and assessing the digital consumer market (market developments and trends, strategies of the leading players, data-informed insights).
- Strong track record of producing thought leading research reports
- Established experience in using data (e.g. data reported by companies and survey data) to inform storylines for reports and presentations.
- Familiarity with major trends shaping the mobile industry (e.g. technology, market demands) and the varying company strategies.
- Proven track record of engaging with ecosystem players (e.g. regular briefings, meetings, presentations). Public speaking skills very welcome.
- Comfortable to work in a matrix environment where analysts work with both their managers and other analysts within the GSMA Intelligence
- Candidates could come from an analyst house, consultancy, financial services firm or an industry player in TMT.
- The role demands a considerable level of self-discipline and self-management. It also demands someone willing and able to excel in a team environment that is dynamic. Multi-lingual capability, particularly Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic or Mandarin, is not required but highly desirable.
- The GSMA encourages personal and professional development and this is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to develop within the organisation and the wider telecommunications industry, and to help grow the GSMA Intelligence reputation as an influential and authoritative analyst house.
