Our client is actively seeking a talented Lead Engineer / Project Manager II to work with a team located in Mount Holly, NC. This is a 1-year contract opportunity with the possibility for extension.

Job Overview:

The primary role for the Lead Engineer / Project Manager II will be to provide support with developing detailed protection and control (P&C) design packages for DER facilities. In addition, the Lead Engineer / Project Manager II will be expected to perform laboratory testing of P&C packages and have a strong background in PSCAD/RSCAD software to perform control Hardware-in-the-Loop (cHIL) testing. The Lead Engineer / Project Manager II will be expected to create process and procedures for performing cHIL testing for complex circuit and protective relaying packages. The successful candidate should also have extensive knowledge in developing AC and DC schematics for protective relaying and using relay software (AcSELerator) to develop templates for P&C philosophy.

In addition, the Lead Engineer / Project Manager II role will provide; project development support, project initiation support, standards and specifications reviews, request for proposal (RFP) development, procurement support, quality assurance checks, and testing and commissioning support. The candidate should have a background in creating detailed design packages including wiring diagrams, schematics, site layouts, and equipment specifications. Experience completing electrical design calculations will be required including, short circuit analysis, load flow and cable sizing calculations, auxiliary load calculations, UPS sizing calculations, and performing time current coordination analyses using ETAP software is required. The successful candidate should have a strong electrical engineering background with general knowledge of civil and mechanical engineering concepts. This position will require the ability to support multiple projects in various phases of the project life cycle.

The Lead Engineer / Project Manager II position will also be expected to support the programming and integration of our site controls in various platforms across the enterprise. Experience in automation controller programming containing MODBUS, DNP, IEC 61850, and additional communication protocols are desired.

Such a wide range of activities dictates the successful candidate will have been directly associated with previous electric utility projects or similar industry projects. Interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team is required as this role will have continuous interaction with clients and internal/external stakeholders. Energy Storage and cHIL testing is relatively new so this role will function in a “pseudo start-up” environment while following the established rules and polices of a traditional electric utility. Candidates should also have experience with industry standards such as IEEE 1547, NFPA 855, IEEE 80/81, IEEE 1584, NEC and NESC.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design of protection and control philosophies for DER assets including Battery Energy Storage Systems, Photovoltaic Systems, and Microgrid Systems
  • Design of protection and control wiring diagrams for testing in a lab environment
  • Control Hardware-in-the-Loop testing of P&C philosophy utilizing real-time transient analysis equipment and software
  • Development of process and procedures for cHIL testing for repeatability and future regression testing
  • Development of wiring diagrams, schematics, and functionality of inverters, relays, UPS systems, and GEMS to assist with the troubleshooting of issues within the site boundary.
  • Performing electrical system studies using ETAP software (short circuit, load flow, time current coordination, and arc flash)
  • Contract development support (e.g., Review RFP documents, proposed DER contracts, revise exhibits, attend bid evaluation meetings, etc.)
  • Creation of documents and procedures related to site testing and commissioning.
  • Responsible for developing in-depth technical design packages of the energy storage, solar, and microgrid design drawings.
  • Work with internal engineering teams to identify opportunities to improve contract documentation, standards development, and the operation of energy storage, solar, and microgrid facilities.
  • Review and facilitate redlines of design drawings supplied by the awarded contractors to validate conformance with Client standards and requirements.
  • Validate designs conform to industry practices and standards. Note areas that require modifications due to non-conformance and provide recommendations to obtain adherence.
  • Participate in weekly discussions with clients, team leaders, project managers, and internal stakeholders to discuss the milestone progress and supporting information to monitor project progress.
  • Provide technical guidance and responses to the EPC for project development. Technical support shall occur from project initiation through project completion. This includes providing field support to help resolve construction issues.
  • Coordinate and understand impact of the entire project to include scope not awarded to the EPC, (e.g., Telecom design, Control System integration, Customer Delivery design activities, Transmission / Distribution circuit upgrades, etc.)
  • Support DGOC Operators with trouble shooting and analysis of operational activity & metrics. Review GEMS data and help inform operational decisions to improve performance of facilities.
  • Provide engineering support between DEOM and DCC’s in all jurisdictions.
  • Support Preventative and Corrective maintenance activities or participate in RCA’s as requested.
  • Become proficient with the Greensmith Energy Management System (GEMS) software and be willing to teach/train other potential users.

A reasonable estimate of the pay range for this role is $60.55 – $65.55 per hour.

The disclosed pay range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. The compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case, such as skills and experience levels.
