Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the District 6 Lead Communications Engineer, plans, directs and supervises the execution of assignments for the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of the voice, data, video, and software related to all MassDOT communication and electronic systems including, but not limited to: two-way radio, fiber optic, telephone private branch exchange, programmable logic controllers, tunnel ventilation, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon gas monitoring, local field controllers, remote terminal units, overhead and portable variable message signs, emergency telephone, automatic gates, highway advisory radio, traffic and security video, security access control, integrated project control system, real-time traffic monitoring and any ancillary electronic equipment.
  • Responsible for coordinating all work with other Communications Technical Support Supervisors, Telecommunications Analysts and Communication Department Engineers to insure continuous operation of all equipment; responsible for procuring all required supplies to insure timely completion of all assignments; aids in the creation and adherence to all departmental procedures; assures adherence to all approved policies, practices and safety procedures; evaluates the performance of assigned technicians.
  • Coordinates the operation, maintenance and repair of District-6 Communications Systems distributed through Facility Buildings, Tunnel & Surface Roadways, and Utility service areas. These systems include (40 sites 2300 devices) Two-Way Radio and, (all facilities 2000+ fibers) Distributed Fiber Optic Networks, (6 sites 260 systems) SONET Network Rings, (16 sites 500 devices) Voice PBX Network, Channel Bank Networks, (15 facilities 209 sub-systems) Tunnel Roadway Ventilation Systems, (15 facilities 3500+ devices) Programmable Logic Control systems, (185) Carbon Monoxide-Hydrocarbon-Hydrogen Sulfide monitoring systems, (192 sites 10,000 devices) Remote SCADA Terminal Unit Network including, (260) Local Field Controller Networks, (148) Overhead & Portable Variable message signs, (47) Over Height Vehicle Detector Tunnel Safety systems, Emergency Telephone systems, Automatic gates, Highway Advisory Radio, (700+) Traffic and Security Video Cameras, Building Security Access Systems, Integrated Intelligent Highway sensor network.
  • Provides technical, maintenance and installation support to former Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, Mass Highway District/Depots and Registry of Motor Vehicles Offices; now divisions of MassDOT.
  • Supervises technicians in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of all listed electronic systems and equipment.
  • Schedules shift workload and assigns projects issued to all technicians in coordination with other Communications Technical Support Supervisors and Communication Department Engineers.
  • Maintains on call list for responding to service calls 24/7.
  • Ensures compliance with all policies, practices and safety procedures.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required and directed by the Director of Communications & Electronics.
  • Certification in electronics from an accredited technical institute is preferred.

Qualifications


Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least (A) six years of field experience in the installation, testing, troubleshooting and repair of communication systems and electronic equipment, and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a current and valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Must be available for call out to support emergency situations.
