As a member of the MSU IT Community, this position participates in and supports IT efforts, projects, and initiatives.
The Network Analyst is an integral member of the Network Services Team participating in the support and operation of Montana State University’s network and telecommunications services. The position requires a basic understanding of networking, telecommunications, and communications cabling concepts. The position requires precision work, the ability to follow instructions, customer service, troubleshooting, and technical support skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under general to direct supervision, assist team with basic and routine tasks:
Install, terminate, and test fiber-optic and copper distribution (riser) and station (horizontal) cable, fiber-optic and copper (outdoor) cable between buildings, terminals, patch panels, patch cables, jumpers, and communication jack components.
Install cable pathway hardware.
Install pedestal and other enclosures used in the routing of communication cable between buildings.
Activate data jacks according to standard procedures and practices in use.
Learn campus cable pathways, Telecommunication Room locations, and requirements and best practices on campus for installing copper and fiber cable.
Support the installation, configuration, testing, and validation of network and telecommunications equipment, components, systems, and related infrastructure including UPS, PDU, racks, cabinets, and communications cabling using standard tools, meters, testing devices, software applications, and techniques according to plans, drawings, schematics, blueprints, documents, written and/or verbal instructions, and industry best practices. Document installations and test results according to standard procedures and practices in use.
Respond to network and/or telecommunications system failures.
Troubleshoot, identify, correct and/or repair basic and fundamental network, telecommunications, and/or communications cabling problems, including software, and/or replacing defective equipment and/or components.
Support the maintenance of network and telecommunications, UPS and PDU equipment, including new software releases, patches, and upgrades. Perform maintenance activities on communications cabling.
Create and/or update documents and records including cable records, usage reports, equipment life-cycle records, equipment, tool, parts, and materials inventories, equipment operation and support documents, and site condition and inventory reports.
Assist with annual inventory of communication wiring parts and material.
Maintain and submit records of time and materials required to complete projects and tasks.
Support the configuration of monitoring systems to alert on abnormal configuration or operation; maintain monitoring functionality as changes occur.
Provide guidance for student employees.
Participate in performance-related goal setting and achievement to meet personal and organizational goals and objectives.
Organize, prioritize, and communicate on-going work to meet multiple task and project timelines.
Attend and participate in trainings and other professional development activity.
Participate in projects, complete tasks, and perform job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Demonstrated experience with communications cabling.
Demonstrated experience using standard tools and equipment for the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of communications cabling, telecommunications, and network infrastructure.
Basic understanding of networking, telecommunications, and communications cabling concepts.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to handle competing demands and maintain high levels of customer service and response.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Demonstrated experience with the installation, termination, testing and maintenance of Category 5e or 6 UTP communications infrastructure.
Demonstrated experience with the installation, termination, testing and maintenance of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cable.
Demonstrated experience with the installation, termination, and splicing of outdoor plant telephone cable.
Knowledge of National Electric Code and TIA/EIA standards for the installation of telecommunications cable and equipment.
Completion of Amp Netconnect ACT I, and/or ACT II, and/or Installation training.
