Job Description
The Network Engineering team is part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) department that designs and operates network and telecom services and solutions to support the laboratory’s mission. This includes assisting researchers to provide IT infrastructure solutions at all NREL locations and collaboration with other National Laboratories on research projects, as well as NREL partners. As part of the networking team, this position will work closely with other ITS network engineers, ITS teams, researchers, and research operations staff. This will also include assisting in the implementation of network engineering solutions and support for all NREL building access controls and lab protection networks as necessary.
The network engineering team has four areas of responsibilities including network engineering to support research, administrative, and data center needs; Telecommunications to support unified communications and collaboration services; infrastructure automation for campus, research and data center solutions, and a structured cabling team that designs and installs indoor and outdoor cabling infrastructure.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Hands on experience with Cisco routers and switches in a large corporate environment
- Hands on experience configuring and troubleshooting firewalls (Palo Alto preferred)
- Proficient configuring and troubleshooting routing technologies and protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP)
- Proficient configuring and troubleshooting switching technologies and protocols (VLANs, Etherchannel, Spanning Tree, QOS, etc.)
- Hands on experience with VPNs (IPsec, SSL)
- Experience troubleshooting LAN/WAN and application performance related issues
- Experience with network management tools such as Cisco Prime, SolarWinds and NETQ
- Experience configuring RADIUS and TACACS
- Knowledge of optical Ethernet concepts (e.g., single-mode and multi-mode fiber, transceiver types)
- Experience gathering requirements and input to evaluate and integrate technical recommendations to address project specific needs and technological challenges
- Hands-on experience with operating systems (e.g., Linux, OS X, and Microsoft Windows)
- Ability to work participate in an on-call rotation, including overnight and weekends.
- Self-starter with good time management skills
- Strong analytical and effective problem-solving sills
Preferred Qualifications

Cisco certification(s) – CCNA/CCNP

Experience with load balancers (F5)

Experience with controller based wireless deployments (Cisco, Aruba)

Experience with Mellanox, Edge-Core and Cumulus Linux

Experience with High Performance data center networks (Leaf-Spine)

Experience deploying and troubleshooting IPv6

Experience with perfSONAR setup and monitoring

Knowledge of Industrial Ethernet hardware and protocols

Understanding of network automation using Ansible and Git and other tools

Experience with various programming and scripting languages (e.g., Python, shell scripting, etc.)

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: IT Professional III-Network Engineering / Annual Salary Range: $75,500 – $135,900
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
