NETWORK SPECIALIST 1/11
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform technical duties related to the maintenance and operation of district LAN, WAN and telephone systems, such as but not limited to hardware and software troubleshooting and problem resolution, user assistance, and equipment installation, testing and maintenance; troubleshoot and maintain the district’s data communications network and other installed communication architectures and protocols, and to perform related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, incumbents exercise independent judgment within the framework of established policies and procedures. This class performs a variety of specialized and technical functions related to the district’s Wide-Area Network, Local-Area Networks, and telecommunications systems.
Network Specialist I is the entry level to this, series, requiring training and some experience in the field. Initially under closer supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of installation, testing,
and maintenance duties of increasing complexity. Incumbents normally advance to the II level after gaining sufficient experience and proficiency to meet the requirements of the II level.
Network Specialist II is the fully qualified journey level in the series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties of the class.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Monitors and maintains the operation of district LAN, WAN and telephone systems; conducts routine diagnostic tests and makes site visits in response to user reports in order to investigate, define and resolve operating problems;
Performs or coordinates the installation and adjustment of LAN, WAN and telephone cabling systems, switches, firewalls, routers, servers, telephone switches, microcomputers, peripherals and associated software;
Edits, inputs and maintains security system files; adds/deletes users and assigns rights;
Resolves network-level communications problems to ensure users continuous access to all available networks.
Determines need for and performs basic equipment maintenance and repair; performs diagnostic tests to identify malfunctions and refers major repairs to appropriate source for correction; assists in reviewing equipment for repair and replacement recommendations;
Installs or coordinates installation of upgrades to operating system and application software; Provides training, technical assistance and troubleshooting to faculty, staff and students in the operation of LAN, WAN and related equipment;
Works with telecommunications providers to secure the highest quality products and services at the lowest cost.
Ensures the proper and safe use, transportation and storage of equipment; Maintains records and prepares reports related to equipment, service and parts; Performs related technical and clerical tasks in support of assigned functions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles, capabilities and operations of computer hardware, software and peripheral devices related to local, wide-area, and telecommunications networks.
Principles of local, wide-area, and telecommunications network design and operating systems. Data transmission protocols
Methods of network connectivity.
Configuration and installation of both network hardware and network security systems. Tools, equipment, and procedures used in diagnosis, maintenance and repair of networks. General office practices and procedures.
Skill in:
Installing, adjusting and operating a variety of network system hardware and software. Troubleshooting network problems and taking appropriate corrective actions.
Performing minor maintenance and repair of computers and peripheral devices. Implementing network system activities and services
Managing projects and developing action plans.
Scheduling, performing and monitoring a variety of tasks in accordance with priorities and timelines.
Instructing and assisting others in the proper use of equipment, computers and software. Reading and interpreting technical documents such as installation, operation and repair manuals. Maintaining accurate records and preparing clear reports.
Working independently and using sound judgment within the framework of policies, procedures and guidelines.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Interpreting and applying relevant laws, rules, policies and other guidelines associated with assigned functional area(s).
A typical way of acquiring the required knowledge, skills and abilities might be: Level 22.0 – I:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, with college coursework in computers, telecommunications, or a related field, and experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems which has provided the required
knowledge, skills and abilities. Minimum of three years experience of computer network design and installation.
Level 24.0-II:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, with college coursework in computers, telecommunications, or a related field, and experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems which has provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities, Minimum of five years experience of computer network design and installation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical abilities required of this classification may include the following:
Vision which can be corrected to a level sufficient to successfully read hand-written, typed and computer-generated information and data, as well as computer terminal displays.
Hearing and speech ability sufficient to enable communication by telephone and in person.
Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate hand tools and to operate, adjust, clean, troubleshoot and repair computer and telecommunications equipment.
Physical ability to reach, bend, lift and carry 30 to 50 pounds.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid California Driver license and the willingness and ability to travel to various sites within the bay area.
May require willingness and ability to work occasional evening and/or weekend hours.
