In the Telecom Engineering Department, Engineers engage in the design of telecom systems involving fiber optic networks, wireless networks, SONET and IP based transport systems and tele-protection applications involving wireless communications, power line carrier communications and various digital/analog tele-protection systems and other ancillary systems in accordance with the appropriate industry standards and regulations.
Candidates selected for this position will be included in Hydro One’s New Grad training and development program. Over the course of this two-year program, candidates will have the opportunity to rotate through several roles allowing them to gain experience working on different projects and in different environments. A combination of training and mentoring will be provided.
Primary Responsibilities
- Working with the Network Infrastructure Manager in the Telecom Engineering department provide telecom engineering services associated with telecom facilities.
- Perform telecom design work for projects in more than one of the following technologies: LAN/WAN networking, SONET/digital/analog muxs, fiber optic cabling, outside plant, microwave, leased Telco services, cable protection, teleprotection, wireless systems, and network management systems.
- Understand and conduct the utilization of telecom transmission facilities in the provision of power system telecom services, including that related to the protection, control monitoring and operation of the power system.
- Prepare final designs, based on receipt of accepted tender and technical information, along with sketches and instructions and forward to Supervisor for general review and passing on to Drawing Production Section for the preparation of detailed design drawings.
Qualifications and Experience
- Graduate from an accredited university with degree in Bachelor of Electrical Engineering.
- Eligible to be a licensed & practicing Professional Engineer within the Province of Ontario (PEO) is an asset.
- Valid driver’s license in Ontario.
- Basic, practical, and technical knowledge in electrical theory, design, analysis, and application.
- Good understanding and knowledge/experience in using software applications:
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
- Electrical design tools such as AutoCAD.
- Familiar with general engineering project life cycles and processes.

- Good technical presentation skills that ensure audience could grasp sophisticated (or simple) technical information/ideas.
- Attention to details, quality driven in day-to-day, routine, or complex tasks, maintains focus to ensure high quality work.
- Ability to analyze complex problems including power system related problems, breakdown to manageable tasks and implement solutions.
