Under limited supervision, is responsible for providing therapeutic nutrition services for clients with high risk and/or complex nutrition-related medical conditions. Develops nutrition care plans for high-risk patient referrals and approve special and metabolic formulas. Participates in quality assurance processes for nutrition services.
Nutrition Care: Assesses and diagnose the nutritional status of clients with high risk and/or complex nutrition-related medical conditions referred from WIC, MCH programs, as well as other health care providers. Develops and implements nutrition interventions including counseling, follow-up, referral, and coordination of care with other health care providers. Provides and documents care utilizing the Nutrition Care Process and according to program policy.
Food Packages and Special Formulas: Approves, documents, distributes, and track special and metabolic formulas per program policy and procedures. Orders special and metabolic formulas for drop shipment to clinics. Provides consultation and technical assistance related to special formulas to staff and health care providers. Enters, updates, and issues food benefits for high-risk clients and clients receiving special formulas.
- Consultation, Technical Assistance and Outreach: Provides professional expertise, consultation and technical expertise and assistance to health care team members, health care providers, community organizations, staff, and the public. Participates in the orientation, and training nutrition staff as requested. Serves as a preceptor for dietetic interns completing supervised professional practice experiences in the region.
- Quality Assurance: Assists in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of WIC/ MCH nutrition services. Assists with quality assurance processes for WIC program nutrition services, i.e., RD high risk documentation, WIC certifications, nutrition education, and special formulas.
- Professional Development and Training: Updates professional skills and knowledge to assure delivery of quality nutrition services. Participates in continuing education opportunities. Complete and maintain advance certification (s) required for the position.
: Some positions require registration or eligibility for registration by the American Dietetics Association. A bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor’s degree in any field, eligibility for registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation

Agency Additional Requirements
: Registered dietitian (RD or RDN) with a master’s degree in nutrition, foods and nutrition, community nutrition, dietetic, public health or related field and two (2) years of experience in clinical dietetics or as a nutritionist in a public health organization providing clinical services or a Registered Dietitian (RD or RDN) with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, foods and nutrition, community nutrition, dietetic or related field and five (5) years of experience in in clinical dietetics or as a nutritionist in a public health organization providing clinical service.
The position requires broad knowledge of theoretical principles and practices of normal and clinical nutrition. Advanced level of knowledge and skill in nutrition assessment, nutrition care planning, case management and care coordination, management of nutrition services required for problem diagnosis, counseling, and evaluation of clients from diverse backgrounds and in developing care plans for clients with multiple and complex health and therapeutic nutrition needs. Has the ability to work effectively with people from a variety of socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. Advanced, in-depth expertise in a specialty area be required for some positions. Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the health care team, other health care providers and public. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
Immunization: All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis, Varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.
Public Health staff with job-specific risk of COVID-19 exposure who choose not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine or provide documentation of prior vaccination, or who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical contraindications or religious exemption, will be required to receive routine periodic COVID-19 testing by DHEC on a weekly basis. Vaccinated employees will not be required to receive periodic testing but elect to be tested to monitor their health status.
State Disaster Plan: In accordance with the State’s Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DHEC employees be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster.
