Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

Behind the scenes, but ahead of the curve: help us develop the next-generation public broadcaster.

Created in 2015 to align, lighten and modernize infrastructure, the Technology & Infrastructures (T&I) team is the backbone and the future forward arm of CBC/Radio-Canada. We are the people that make stuff work. We make connections; between media content, systems, people and places. We are the space in between.

A place with purpose. CBC/Radio-Canada has always been a highly-regarded pioneer of media technology. Not just in Canada, but around the world. Today, we’re transforming ourselves from conventional radio and television broadcaster into a modern digital media company. Technology is the driving force. T&I is the team making it happen.

Your role

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a Surveillance Technician for its Network Operation Centre (NOC) in the new, state of the art, Maison Radio-Canada building in Montreal. Using monitoring tools such as Solarwinds, you’ll be in charge of monitoring all critical infrastructure and systems to make sure they are in proper working condition and report any alarms or issues to the respective support groups for their follow-up. In addition to taking action on active issues, your role at the NOC will be to develop an expertise to proactively identify problems in order to address issues before they materially impact content and services. As a NOC technician, you will be part of the first line responder team for incidents related to our internal operations, production, presentation or delivery infrastructure.

Key Duties:
Watch and oversee the flawless operation of critical infrastructure and systems used by fast-paced live news, sports event coverage, current affairs, streaming programs and more.

Using the central monitoring tool, acknowledge and identify problems based on key metrics reported by the probing equipment.

Perform initial triage and enable pre-established workaround if possible to protect critical infrastructure.

Notify maintenance for troubleshooting, escalation and quick incident resolution. NOC staff will not be system specialist; responsibility for troubleshooting and resolving technical problems lies within the support team.

Escalate issues according to the procedures when required.

Monitor patterns to identify potential problem areas and chronic problems.

Document problems by accurately recording in the logging system all required information related to the incident.

Perform duties in accordance with documented methods of procedures and workflow.

Provide quality, timely, and accurate response and communication for any issues within defined areas of responsibility, including but not limited to phone, email and instant message contacts.

Provide input and feedback for the development and optimization of NOC management applications, tools, workflow and procedures.

Analyze technical drawings and diagrams to understand the various system being monitored in the NOC.

Create performance reports for Media Presentation and Media partners.

Perform, in whole or in part, the functions or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.

It is important to note that the NOC will be operational 24/7. Thus, willingness to work on shift rotation 24/7, including evenings, weekends and holidays is required.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
College diploma in computer science, network technology, electronics, broadcast telecommunication, audio-video or other relevant field

Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with complex, high performance system and network with multiple sites (data centers and audio/video facilities)

Working knowledge of monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, SNMP, Grafana, MRTG, Cricket, etc.

Proficiency with TV & Radio Broadcast networks or systems is an asset

Knowledge of audio/video standards such as SD, HD, SDI, ASI, AES and ST2110 is an asset

Experience working in an Operations Center supporting WAN and LAN infrastructure networks is an asset

Knowledge of cloud computing and virtualization concepts
