OSP Field Engineer
Utility Solutions Group is currently seeking an OSP/ISP Field Engineering Technician for a full-time position located in the Southeast.
The OSP/ISP Field Engineering Technician works primarily in the field, gathering relevant data by measuring cable heights of attachment on utility poles, identifying and measuring existing utility markings, and taking/labeling photos of all existing field conditions for the engineering and design of aerial, underground, and buried fiber optic facilities and other underground/aerial utilities. This information will be used to create plans for new utility construction. Position is to be primarily in the field, but with some time focused on subsequent administrative tasks as required by project leadership. When not verifying items in the field, the OSP/ISP Engineering Technician will assist designers and engineers with permitting and design.
This position requires frequent overnight travel around North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia, and will have extended work hours; overtime and weekends as needed. In most cases, you will be provided a company vehicle – otherwise you will be reimbursed for mileage. You must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, and be insurable by the company’s auto insurance carrier.
Qualified individuals should be experienced in reading and understanding utility or telecommunications cable systems and associated documents. Telecom experience is preferred, but training can be provided. A successful candidate must meet most of the knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience requirements outlined below:
A thorough understanding/ experience in the OSP/ISP telecom industry, public right-of-way, private easements, existing utilities such as water, sewer, electric, gas, and other underground and aerial utilities.
Proficiency in base-mapping, Google Earth, GIS and layering, fundamental knowledge of Outside Plant, running line, conduit and cable design for copper, fiber optics, coax, manholes, hand holes, Make-Ready Engineering and poles (aerial and underground).
Experience with GIS based design platforms: Utilities, research files, drawings and maps for relative information, plat research, assessor’s information, survey maps and parcel information (GIS).
Experience with underground utility locating
Knowledgeable in city, county, state and local municipalities encroachment permits, Traffic control and specialty permits (e.g., UPRR, Caltrans, etc.), easement right away and various environmental permits are highly desired. You will work with local municipalities for permitting acquisition and attend meetings in person as required.
Intermediate to advanced skills with Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
Intermediate to Advanced skills with workings of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access)
Must possess strong problem solving and multitasking skills, with strong attention to detail and a number/math orientation
Demonstrated strong professional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Use mature judgment in all aspects of the job
Demonstrated ability to keep a positive, professional attitude in a fast-paced environment subject to specific deadlines which must be met
Possess the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with daily engagement with the engineering team and project management staff via emails / phone as well as occasional in-person meetings.
Acceptable attendance and prior work record
Ability to work discreetly with sensitive and confidential information
Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions
Must be able to stand, bend, squat, walk, move, lift, carry equipment ( >20lb) for the duration of the work day
Ability to use smartphones, tablets, laptops, applications, and web-based programs to complete field or desktop surveys and upload results daily.
Attend onsite meetings with appropriate stake holders to explain construction procedures and routing as necessary.
The ability to take direction and instructions from local and/or remote staff is critical to this position.
Qualified applicants must also be able to work overtime as necessary.
Position requires passing a Background Check and Employment Drug Screen.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. College degree highly preferred.
Prior OSP/ISP Construction or field experience highly preferred.
