We have an exciting opportunity for a Pilot-in-the-Loop Handling Qualities Engineer.

The selected applicant will provide GN&C Crew Operations / Pilot-In-The-Loop Expertise to Human Landing System (HLS) and the Commercial Crew Program (CCP) for the Rendezvous Proximity Operations and Docking (RPOD) and Descent/Landing flight phases.

Tasks will include:

  • Serve in an insight/oversight role for the development of GN&C crew displays, procedures, pilot handling qualities, etc. for both HLS and the selected commercial partners for all flight phases
  • Review available documentation, technical data, computer software, and DRDs made available by commercial partners
  • Support regular program meetings, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), and relevant program milestone reviews
  • Help define manual piloting handling quality requirements and evaluate how well the commercial partners are meeting the intent of those requirements
  • Assist with trade studies or independent assessments related to the development of crew displays, handling qualities, or manual procedures
  • Aid in the development of a pilot-in-the-loop GN&C simulation that can be used for both engineering evaluations and crew training

Here’s What You’ll Need:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate’s experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school with five (5) years of related engineering experience, or a Master’s degree from an accredited engineering school and four (4) years of related engineering experience, or Ph.D. from an accredited engineering school and zero (0) years of experience
  • Skills and experience should demonstrate:
  • Experience with pilot-in-the loop testing and determination of handling qualities ratings
  • Knowledge of crew operations and procedures
  • Integrated GN&C systems knowledge including hardware/software interfacing
  • Ability to examine System Requirements and provide constructive feedback
  • Simulation and modeling of aerospace systems
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment consisting of NASA civil servants and various contractor employees
  • The ability to ask questions and state concerns in a high pressure environment

Requisition Preferences:

  • MS in Aerospace Engineering with 10+ years of experience with a GN&C background
  • Working knowledge of Cooper Harper and Bedford Workload ratings systems
  • Expertise with Descent and Landing methods/capabilities
  • Expertise with RPOD methods/capabilities
  • Experience with cockpit displays and their associated interfaces
  • Familiarity with C++, Python, and the TRICK simulation architecture
  • Expertise with Matlab/Simulin

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
