  • Responsible for reviewing utility poles and performing make ready engineering work that complies with the NESC and/or local safety regulations.

Position:

TOP Engineers Plus is seeking a pole make-ready / OSP designer

Enthusiastic to work with project managers, team leads, and other technical staff in the preparation of pole contact applications and pole make-ready design. Organization, communication, and design skills will be essential to efficiently produce quality outputs while meeting budget and schedules on multiple concurrent projects.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with senior design engineers to prepare pole contact applications for the installation of fiber optic cable in a fast-paced environment that demands accuracy and proficiency.
  • Identify the necessary requirements to successfully attach fiber cables to a pole while meeting NESC and utilities requirements.
  • Review utility poles and field notes to determine most accurate make ready solution.
  • Provide solutions for poles that do not meet NESC and utilities requirements.
  • Position will primarily work in a Home office or (office) setting. It is imperative that candidate can sustain an efficient home office environment without distractions.
  • May require travel to a manager’s office or the team leads office.
  • May require some field work & assist in the gathering of survey information and the development of plans and maps from field notes.
  • Self-check all work and check the work of others as required.
  • Be a continuous learner, always willing to grow their skillset to better enable the business to be responsive to changing client expectations. Willing to be mentored by seasoned experts on the team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in English is required. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing is required.
  • Must possess a current Driver’s License.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the USA.
  • Experience and understanding of outside plant engineering and construction techniques.
  • Ability to produce accurate work with attention to detail on time and within budget.
  • Team oriented and willing to put in the time and effort necessary to see a project through to successful completion. May periodically require overtime, including weekends.
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs with emphasis in Excel.
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding technical drawings and specifications.
  • Understanding of NESC, and joint use applications.
  • Self-starter who can work with little or no supervision, strong organizational skills, positive attitude, and an ability to learn quickly.

Skills Considered a Plus:

  • Familiarity with pole loading software (OCALC, SpidaCalc, etc.)
  • Knowledge of ArcMap and GIS principals.
  • Knowledge of FTTX design.

Education And Experience:

  • Associate degree from an accredited two-year college or technical school/diploma/certificate or equivalent in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 1-2 year’s work experience in outside plant design with strong emphasis on pole make-ready.

Typical Projects:

  • Outside Plant Design (OSP). Candidate will be tasked with interpreting and implementing communication engineering design elements regarding placement of Fiber Optic Cable in an Electric Utility Distribution or Transmission System. Facilities may be overhead or underground.
  • Preparation of pole contact applications.
  • Create the base documents for the field survey of Electric Distribution Poles and development of Map books utilizing clients GIS data.
  • Opportunity to learn FTTH (Fiber to the Home) Design. Candidate may be tasked with design responsibilities related to FTTH layout and design.
