The Commerce City Police Department fosters and actively engages in community-based policing initiatives that promote a standard of excellence in providing police services in Commerce City and the region. The Commerce City Police Department is hiring the most qualified candidates who can demonstrate the personal character and competency that will contribute to the Department’s success. The most qualified candidates will be dedicated to service of others over self, will have experience or an articulable understanding of the community-based policing philosophy, can demonstrate their ability to communicate and problem solve effectively, and can work collaboratively in a team environment.
A Police Detective performs general and specific law enforcement and investigative functions within the municipal environment. Detectives observe and act upon circumstances that call for law enforcement intervention. Detectives manage criminal case loads and conduct follow up investigative activities to support the successful prosecution of offenders. Detectives are expected to work minimal direct supervision. Detective work involves developing trusting relationships through active community engagement, responding to complaint calls, investigating crimes, mediating civil disputes, preparing reports, collecting and submitting evidence related to criminal investigations, testifying in court, training new personnel, apprehending violators or suspects, and general policing duties, such as enforcing traffic laws, educating the community, and patrolling the City in an official vehicle to deter and prevent crime. Detectives are expected to exercise responsibility and discretion in the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare. Detectives are expected to exercise independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations, and exercising safety practices and procedures. Detectives work in high-risk and stressful situations, challenging environmental conditions and demanding work schedules.

The hiring range for this position is $32.17 – $39.54 / hourly ; $66,917.49 – $82,248.35 / salary.

Essential duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by Police Officers (Detectives); they are not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties, responsibilities, and skills required. A Police Officer (Detective) performs general and specific law enforcement functions within the municipal environment, including but not limited to:
- Actively engage the community and build trusting relationships with community members, co-workers and colleagues; educate the community about the law and police practices.
- Exercise leadership in the community to implement problem-solving activities.
- Exercise independent judgment and discretion in dealing with routine, dangerous or unusual situations, safety practices and procedures.
- Patrol an assigned area searching for indicators of possible criminal activity or threats to life and property; answer calls for police service; enforce municipal ordinances and state laws; make field contacts and prepare required reports; conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents.
- Make traffic stops and issue warnings or citations as necessary; check vehicles and observe occupants of vehicles; respond to traffic-related incidents and other emergencies; provide first aid for injured persons, and take safeguards to prevent further accidents; interview principals and witnesses; take written statements and examine conditions of accident scenes; clear or direct the clearing of obstructions and wreckage; observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist, advise and educate motorists and enforce traffic laws.
- Make arrests as necessary; serve warrants and subpoenas; conduct searches and seizures involving people, vehicles and structures; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; interrogate suspects; mediate civil disputes, gather and preserve evidence; receive, search and book prisoners; fingerprint and transport prisoners; testify and present evidence in court.
- Write reports and field notes; participate in individual and staff development; attend briefings and training sessions; perform routine maintenance on assigned firearms and other department issued equipment.
- Assist the public and answer questions; administer first aid and respond to calls for medical assistance; establish and maintain good relationships with the public.
- Maintain knowledge of local ordinances and state laws, rules of evidence for criminal cases, crime prevention techniques, current investigation techniques, traffic control techniques, and care and custody of persons and property.
- Drive vehicles under normal, hazardous and emergency conditions.
- Availability to work long hours and to called out while off duty.
- Work consistently and effectively without direct supervision; autonomously but work well in a team environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and city laws, ordinances, and regulations, the vehicle code, penal code, laws of arrest; search and seizure; rules of evidence; and court procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- At least twenty-one (21) years old
- Possess a valid Colorado driver’s license OR are eligible to obtain a Colorado driver’s license upon hire
- Earned a High School Diploma or a General Education Development (GED) or high school equivalency certificate
- Colorado P.O.S.T. Certified or eligible for Colorado P.O.S.T. certification
- A United States Citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for United States Citizenship
- Currently employed by a local, county or state law enforcement agency as a certified peace officer (Does not include corrections or detention officers)
- Minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience as a patrol or related law enforcement officer position
- Minimum of an additional two (2) years of full-time criminal detective or investigative experience for a local or state law enforcement agency
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ten (10) or more years of law enforcement experience
- Three (3) or more years of investigative experience
- Spanish language fluency
- Bilingual language skills, or American Sign Language skills
- Associate’s Degree or at least 60 semester hours or the equivalent from an accredited institution
MINIMUM DISQUALIFICATIONS
- Applicant who has applied and has been dismissed from a Police Officer hiring process for the Commerce City Police Department within the last twelve (12) months
- Applicant has a felony conviction
- Applicant received a Court Martial for a crime that is the equivalent of a felony under state or federal law, or received a Dishonorable or Less Than Honorable Discharge from the U.S. military
- Applicant has a conviction for a crime that prevents applicant’s ability to retain their Colorado P.O.S.T. certification as a peace officer
- Applicant has legally or illegally possessed or consumed marijuana, or any of its derivatives in any form, in the last twelve (12) months
- Applicant’s driver’s license has been revoked or suspended in the last twelve (12) months
- Applicant’s driver’s license has been revoked or suspended two (2) or more times in the last five (5) years
- Applicant has illegally sold, manufactured or distributed any controlled substance, prescription drug, steroid or marijuana, or any of its derivatives in any form, in the last ten (10) years
- Applicant has a conviction or deferred judgment for an alcohol-related driving offense in the last five (5) years
- Applicant has two (2) or more convictions or deferred judgments for an alcohol-related driving offense in the last seven (7) years
- Applicant has had a conviction or deferred judgment for hit and run, or failure to remain at the scene of an accident in the last five (5) years
- Driving: Must be able to operate motor vehicles, including motorcycles, car, light pickup
- Trucks, 4-wheel-drive vehicles, utility task vehicles (UTV), golf carts and bicycles
- Office equipment: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, fax, scanner, copy machines and phones
- Computer equipment: Must be able to use a Mobile Computer Terminal, two-way radios, cellular phones, and tablets.

HEALTH CARE PROTECTION: Employees are eligible on the first of the month following the employee’s date of employment. Employees add qualified dependents for coverage options as well.

Health Insurance: The City offers three different health plans administered through United Health Care.
Dental Insurance: Dental insurance is provided through the Delta Dental Plan. Employees select the Delta Dental PPO Base Plan option or the Delta Dental PPO Buy-UP Plan option.
Vision Insurance: VSP provides the vision program. This includes an annual eye exam and an annual frame or contact lenses allowance of $130.
DISABILITY INCOME: Employees are eligible on the first of the month following the employee’s date of employment.
Short Term Disability: The City provides a self-funded Short Term Disability (STD) benefit. When an eligible illness or injury occurs, employees are paid 100% of their normal weekly wage after a 40-hour elimination period.
Long Term Disability Insurance: The City has a Long Term Disability insurance plan that pays 60% of wages, to a maximum of $6,000 per month for qualified employees. There is a 90-day disability eligibility period that coordinates with the STD plan.
SURVIVOR BENEFITS: Employees are eligible on the first of the month following the employee’s date of employment.
Term Life Insurance: The City pays the full premium for term life insurance at two times the annual salary up to $150,000 per employee. Spouses and dependent children are provided a $2,000 life insurance benefit.
Supplemental Life Insurance: Employees have the option to purchase additional coverage for themselves, spouse, and dependents. A guaranteed issue of $100,000 for employees and $50,000 for spouses is offered at the time of eligibility only.
FUTURE FINANCIAL SECURITY: Employees are eligible immediately upon hire.
401(a) Plan: The 401(a) plan makes saving for retirement easy. A 10% mandatory contribution is required of all eligible employees. In addition to the tax-deferred dollars you save, the City matches the employee’s 10% contribution. City contributions are 100% vested after five years.
457 Defined Contribution Plan: Eligible employees put additional tax-deferred dollars away for retirement. The City will match 50% of the employees contribution up to 2%. All contributions are immediately vested.
Roth IRA: Potential tax-free earnings. All contributions are before tax. The City does not have matching on the Roth IRA plan.
FLEXIBLE BENEFIT PLAN: Employees are eligible to enroll during the first thirty days of employment and during open enrollment each year.
**Section 125 Flexible Benefit Plan: Two flexible benefit plans offer a way for employees to pay for many expenses with tax-free dollars. This includes un-reimbursed health, dental and vision expenses for the entire family and child/dependent care expenses necessary for employment.
PAID TIME-OFF BENEFITS:
**Holidays: There are 10 paid holidays each year.
**General Leave: Leave banks are granted to employees after completion of six months of full-time employment. General Leave be used for vacations, personal business, illness, or other reasons as requested by the employee and approved by his/her supervisor.
**Other Paid Time Off: Jury Duty, Injury Leave and Military leave are also available to employees.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS:
Employee Assistance Program (EAP): We provide a confidential Employee Assistance Program to help support you and your family on any issue of concern. Eight private counseling sessions are available on a range of needs including, but not limited to marital issues, parenting concerns, grief counseling, supervisor issues, and drug and alcohol abuse.
Tuition Reimbursement: The City provides a tuition reimbursement program that reimburses qualified educational expenses.
Employee Home Ownership Program: To encourage employees to reside within the City limits of Commerce City, we provide a secured loan for the down payment and/or closing cost assistance on a home in Commerce City. The employee must meet all City criteria as well as first mortgage underwriting criteria.
Personal Computer Employee Purchase Program: To encourage the development of employee computer skills, the City offers an interest-free loan to you for the purchase of computer hardware (including a Desktop or Laptop) and software. The employee must have successfully completed their 6-month Introductory Period for eligibility.
CIGNA Supplemental Insurance: This voluntary insurance offers a selection of plans that will pay for everyday living expenses, lost income, hospital co-pays, and deductibles related to accidents, cancer treatment, and specified health events.
Recreation Center Membership: Employees and family members are eligible for a membership to the Commerce City Recreation Center for $5.00 per person per year..
Golf Course Green Fees: Employees can play the City’s award-winning Buffalo Run Golf Course at a rate of $9.00 for 9-holes or $18.00 for 18-holes. Employees can also purchase golf merchandise at discounted prices.
Wellness: Employees are eligible to earn up to $100 and a floating holiday in the next calendar year for participation in various wellness activities offered by the City throughout the year. Employees and Spouses enrolled in a city medical plan are also eligible for up to $500 each for completing various wellness activities.
Eligibility for Pay Increases: Employees are eligible for a pay increase around the time of their annual appraisal following a successful evaluation. Pay increases do not come at the time of the nine-month introductory evaluation.
