JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties:

The Data Center Operations Manager is responsible for planning and day-to-day operations for

BC Hydro’s corporate Data Center environment, including data centers, servers, data storage,

backup, middleware, server software, and system management tools. The role will be leading a

team of internal staff and external service providers to provide cost effective and reliable services

to BC Hydro business, and to ensure that current and future performance and service level

requirements are met.

The Data Center Operations Manager will:

  • Plan, direct and manage BC Hydro’s Data Center Operation environment and support.

  • Manage and is ultimately accountable for all aspects of corporate data center environments, and

ensure that services are delivered according to established service level agreements.

  • Assign and/or verify work assignments for BC Hydro and outsourced IT infrastructure team.

  • Responsible for managing the day-to-day relationship and provide management oversight to BC

Hydro’s External Service Providers for data center services.

  • Ensure that outsourced technology partners and vendors are providing services consistent with

BC Hydro IT Standards, policies and contractual requirements.

  • Collaborate with outsourced providers to optimize operational efficiencies and identify and

implement operational improvement opportunities.

  • Review and approve financial invoices.

  • Plan and manage IT Data Center Operations budget and provide forecasts.

  • Ensure compliance in software licensing, and optimize the deployment and re-deployment of IT

infrastructure software licenses.

  • Accountable for management of established processes for patch updates and minor

Infrastructure software and firmware upgrades.

  • Manage and ensure compliance to internal IT processes such as Change Management and

Production Turnover (PTO).

  • Work with stakeholders to quickly and effectively implement solutions. Ensure solutions are

thoroughly tested and documented before implementation in the BC Hydro production

environments.

  • Provide management guidance to Service Delivery teams in Infrastructure upgrade initiatives.

  • Collaborate with Vendor Management Office to manage supplier/vendor relationships including

contract renewal and other procurement-related activities.

  • Manage Infrastructure Planning resource to identify capital initiatives to meet ongoing and future

capacity and performance requirements.

  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture to develop long-term strategic roadmap for Data Center

Operations, taking into consideration BC Hydro business needs and industry roadmaps and best

practices.

  • Review and approve production transitions for capital initiatives, and ensure that sustainment

documentation, processes and resources are in place as required.

  • Participate in the development, update and enforcement of IT standards and policies.

  • Work closely with Cybersecurity and Compliance teams to ensure that security and compliance

requirements related to data center hardware and software are met.

  • Manage approvals of Technology Service requests related to data center.

  • Work closely with the other Technology and business groups to ensure successful and cost-

efficient customer service delivery.

  • Provide leadership during business continuity events and major incidents. Work closely with

Major Incident Management team to ensure that incidents are resolved in a timely manner.

  • Support user and senior management communication.

  • Evaluate impact of capital projects to Infrastructure Operations processes and costs, and review

related project documentation as required.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Business Administration, Computer Science or Information Systems.

  • A minimum of 8 years directly related experience (information technology, managing service

providers, telecommunications) or equivalent. Knowledge of IT Infrastructure technology concepts

in data center, servers, data storage and backup, virtualization, Office 365, cloud computing and

system management.

  • 5 years of management or supervisory experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of software licensing metrics and concepts.

  • Knowledge of financial budget planning and management.

  • The ability to understand information technology industry components and trends.

  • The ability to understand BC Hydro business unit IT infrastructure requirements to perform

tactical and operational planning for IT infrastructure functions.

  • The ability to manage limited resources according to the priorities dictated by business

requirements.

  • Previous supervisory experience, including employee performance reviews.

  • Strong customer focus with desire to deliver exceptional client service.

Flexible work model role definitions

Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home

based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for

each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time

from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.

IBEW/Field – No option to work from home

Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.

Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.

Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
